Who is the best drummer ever?

How could I forget?

You may not like Motley Crue but Tommy Lee is a brilliant drummer IMHO.

Buddy Rich!

edit:

Buddy Rich versus Animal

lol, love that link.

don't have the plug in at work :-(

Buddy Rich seems to always be the drummers choice of legend. I've not heard a huge amount and not too into Jazz and Big Band so can't comment (a DVD is on it's way apparently).

It's all subjective so my favs at this moment (this can and will change in 5 minutes)

Neil Peart
Dave Grohl
Ringo
Stewart Copeland
Chad Smith
Bonham

and I'd add Stevie Wonder's drumming from Innervisions

Best drum solo ever Herman Rarebell of the Scorpions on Tokyo Tapes double live album.

Honourable mention for Cozy Powell attempting the 1812 overture on drums complete with cannons @ Hammy Odeon circa 1981.

Phil Collins arguably did some good work on Genesis's early prog rock albums like 'Foxtrot' and 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'..

<legs its...>

The Lamb.....great album with some great drumming.

I used to really enjoy playing drums and I went to a drumming workshop with Missuz Scott around 1993/94 hosted by Paul Wertico from Pat Metheny Group fame.

He's one of the best live drummers I have ever seen. However, if I'm completely honest, I don't know much of his material.

Has any drummer other than Cozey Powell with Dance with the Devil had a top 10 solo single ?

sandy nelson with 'let there be drums', i believe - and burundi stiephenson black (probably), but that was a drum troupe, and on one of the sides was a version with electric guitar..

phil collins too, but a mate of mine, steve washington, is actually the best drummer i've ever witnessed. he did 7 world tours as take that's drummer (oh the shame) and more recently for Texas. he can look at a drum kit and just make it sing... goosebump stylie....amazing stuff...:)

The drumming of Mick Fleetwood on the early Fleetwood Mac stuff is superb.. compliments the rest of the band etc.. which, imho, is what a good drummer should do. ditto Pick Withers.

Phil Collins gets my vote too, hes a very good drummer. If only he had stuck to what he was good at..

Also... Ian Paice - Deep Purple, fabulous drummer.

Dave Lombardo - mega...

Has anyone mentioned Billy Cobham?

Best drummer I've seen live is old matey with Praga Kahn, I presumed it would all be programmed with a drum machine but he beat out all of their drumming with anormal drum kit!!

They we're fucking ace, really fucking good.

from what i can make out here, sandy nelson peaked at #3 with 'let the be drums', but also got to #4 with the 'teen beat' ep, and had top 40 hits with 'drums are my beat' (#30) and 'drummin' up a storm' (#39)

(Shit, I knew I'd forgotten somebody!...)

Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt.

A truly unique and amazing drummer, and most definitely the most incredible I've ever witnessed up close.

Roland 606 too

the 606 was a piece of shit - I laugh my tits off at seeing them go for £150. Has the same snare circuit as the 808 but otherwise duff.

My nomination for best drummer.

The drummer on the first two Love albums, name escapes me, was fantastic, really drove the songs.

Sly Dunbar and Carlton Barrett, of course.

you're just miffed because your name hasn't come up yet
Me?!!

As Clint Eastwood said, "a man's gotta know his limitations".

I was a OK drummer, but never a great one!

Keith Moon, on the other hand..... ;)

(as was Ian Paice, Bonham, Sinatra's drummers, Stuart Copeland etc etc etc)

Your having a laugh mate the 606 is a classic machine, totally underated.
