Early this year (before the Dozenal story) I got a great big culturally appropriative hairdo done by a friend - giant fat twists made with nylon hair. Didn't keep it long because it was so uncomfortable (as you'd imagine it might be having a kilo of nylon tied to your head might be) but they did make me look really cool and a bit like Medusa. During those couple of weeks I got asked about my ethnicity 3 times by complete strangers in the street, but in a very friendly way each time, nobody was anything but complimentary about it (random schoolgirls on buses included). Wonder if that would have been different after the story of Dozenal broke. I was not unaware that what I was doing was .. interesting politically (read up about various related twitter storms before I said yes to the whole thing) but don't think I'd have done it after her story broke, for fear of being misunderstood.

“I will admit that maybe it’s a useful word for some people in kind of stepping forward along the staircase of understanding identity. But I don’t like it because I don’t believe in race. To say ‘transracial’ further entrenches that idea,” she says. “I really feel we need to come up with better vocabulary.”

It’s an unexpected argument from a woman who has built an academic career around race and a life claiming to be black.

“Other people are operating on an autopilot that race is coded in your DNA, that there are different races of human beings and those races are called black, white, etc. As opposed to race is a fiction that was invented,” she says. “What I believe about race is that race is not real. Even so-called "race-specific" medications aren't particularly "race-specific", they just appear to exhibit a slightly better hit rate on "African Americans", although the literature goes into very little detail about how "African American" has been quantified.
