White civil rights leader has pretended to be black for years

The politically-correct wiberal in me has no idea how to respond to this story. It's fucking hilarious but it's also not. Am I allowed to find this funny? Or would it be offensive to do so? It is funny though, isn't it?

The bingo wheel of privilege and oppression must be spinning out of control at the moment. Can someone from ProleDem please formulate an official line?

I'm suddenly remembering one of Armistead Maupin's books in which a white model decided she would pretend to be black.

Very strange of this woman. If I were black, I think I'd be pretty annoyed about someone deciding to be black and pretending to be a victim of racial discrimination when there are plenty of people genuinely suffering disadvantage, police bias etc.

Supposing everyone thought she was black. And she was treated differently for it. Has she experienced racial discrimination? I'd say yes.

Hmm, OK, I haven't, to be honest, read up about her, so my post was just sort of thinking out loud. I still don't think I'd be happy at someone sort of playing at being part of a victimised group.

Apart from WHY?

I think this story absolutely shows up the 'one drop rule' for what it is, a nonsense. I will go further too and say anyone that qualifys the ethnicity of anyone by the amount of 'Black' blood they have is part of the problem, whether that be because they are racist or need to check their internalised racism.

Also, I have family members that look as 'European' as she does. Her phenotype is not unusal in mixed ethnicity families.

Agree. I feel quite uncomfortable also bc by pretending be black and being in that role she's actually erasing the voices of black women in a situation where black women are already marginalised.
