Which order should the league tables be in?

Wilf

Slouching towards Billingham
You'll see, at this link, that the Guardian displays the league tables roughly in the order below:

  • Prem League
  • WSL
  • Major European domestic leagues
  • Championship
  • Scottish Prem
  • League 1 and 2
  • Remaining Scottish leagues
  • Champion's League and other European competitions in a similar pattern
  • Random tables from (mainly) past international competitions

Seeing them set out/prioritised like that has always miffed me in ways I need to unpick (and are all about money):

  • Yes, of course, give the women's game equal prominence, which they kind of do, but then don't ignore non-WSL tables. An idea would be to have a men's and women's tab and the women's tab to have all the UK women's tables.
  • No problem at all in having the European domestic leagues but, again, it's about money and the downplaying of British lower leagues. With this ordering, League 2 ends up 10th on the list.
  • What about non-league football tables?
So, basically, the layout of the tables slavishly follows where the broadcasting money has gone in football, where the money has gone more generally. The running order represents the value modern football puts on the different competitions. So, actually, we're probably at no shit Sherlock time... Anyway, what think you? And do other newspapers/websites that I've been too lazy to research do it differently?

BBC is pretty good, utfse to find the table you want. You can also click on a team that takes you to their page and their tables (if they are in Europe). What it does do badly is ignore certain European teams but not others. So you can see the Bundesliga and click on some teams not others. You can see the Portuguese league but not click on any teams.

I use them for super6, which I'm in at work. Anyone else do super6? I've won my league at work 3 out of the last 4 years. But then this is Wales, so they are more into rugby.

My team are down in the sixth tier having been fairly solid Div 4/League 2 for most of their existence. We're almost totally off the radar now and I'd agree with planetgeli that the BBC do it best in that you can just click and go straight to National League South or wherever you want.

The ruination of the higher echelons of football is totally complete for me now. Never watch MOTD or Champions League and would barely have a clue what was going on at that level if it wasn't for the fact that our morning alarm is 5 Live, so they can put them in whatever order they like. That said, I would have thought SPL would be the logical one to go after the English Premier League, but hey ho.
