Which duvet should I get?

Bump.
I'm looking for a very comfortable duvet. I've only ever had the standard ones, and I 'think' they might even have all been given to me. I can't remember buying a duvet.
What can you recommend?
Also sheets. I don't think my sheets and covers are all that nice. Is there something better? I'm not looking for silk, just a nice freshness.

I have no idea. I just want the best sleeps on offer.

I've always had good duvets and pillows from John Lewis They are lovely and comfy without being ridiculously expensive (they aren't the cheapest, but are good value for decent quality stuff).

I have in the past gone to Debenhams for this sort of thing but I think that ship has sailed - small possibility of ordering online in their oh fuck sale though!

Wouldn't know about down duvets, my bedding choices have always been vegan.

(Due to learning some stuff in my youth about commercial farming for down - I don't object to eating a bird but some stuff is just wrong. If it is affordable and you aren't wealthy then it probably isn't benignly/humanely collected down).

I find that decent hollow fiber bedding to be pretty good.
It's especially good if you like a little extra weight.
I used to like the feeling of being under something a bit heavy when it gets cold.
Recently have swapped back to having two down duvets. My regular super thin one and a higher tog one. It's super warm but kinda ethereal.
Got used to it very quickly though.

Some synthetic pillows are better than others. I've had some of my dakimakura pillows get lumpy while others are a little hard.
I really enjoyed getting a old feather bolster into one of them. Gave it some body.

Pillows can be a bit hit and miss but it's one of those things where if you get one that doesn't suit you then it's neck pain and headache and poor sleep territory - not good!

OH's mum gave us some John Lewis vouchers for Xmas one year and she is someone who needs a formal thank you note - so I sent her a note thanking her and letting her know that we spent the vouchers on some really nice pillows and she was really upset by that for some reason . I tried explaining to her that as we both have back and/or neck problems that having good pillows was a massive quality of life thing, but she treated it as if we'd insulted her - I still don't get it. Mind you I don't get my MIL most of the time so probably no big surprise.

That is a bit odd.
Maybe if your one of those people who can just go to sleep you just don't get it.
Besides what was she expecting you to get?
I think 90% of the stuff we have got from JL is bedding.

Yeah exactly, any time I ever get JL vouchers I am "oooooh, bedding" - they do good quality bedding that would otherwise be a bit outside of our budget, if someone gives me some vouchers then it shouldn't be a great surprise what those vouchers will buy!

And I think you are right, people who sleep well every night regardless of pillows/bedding probably don't understand it.

I tend to buy mine from M & S - probably similar quality to JL I'd guess. I've got a 13.5 tog feather and down quilt - can't remember exactly what it cost but it was a reasonable price. Synthetic pillows this time as the feather box pillows ended up flattening too much.

Sheets and quilt covers - I've not bought these for many years so the ones I've got are probably about twenty years old. They were good quality at the time so have lasted fine. Always get cotton, and go for the higher thread count if you can ATOMIC SUPLEX

Oh should maybe add - although I don't like down, I am not vegan and one of the nicest duvets I have had was one from JL that was filled with silk - now that was fucking luxury lay down in bed feeling like you are being caressed by a fucking cloud bedding... I am sure silk is not environmentally friendly or something

I don't think I've seen a silk-filled quilt on sale - that sounds a bit posh.

Yeah it was a wedding gift from my MIL, its not something I would have considered buying for myself. It was lush though!

And yes the same MIL who later complained that we spent JL vouchers on bedding. It's tiring trying to work out what is ok and what isn't. (There is a possibility that whatever I do might be the wrong thing) ;)

TK Maxx / HomeSense are good for bedding, especially when they have a sale.

I bought a 10.5 tog goose feather and down super king size duvet from there for about £50-60 that was less than half price in their sale. It's really warm and comfortable. It feels like it has substance, rather than weight, compared with synthetics, if that makes any sense?

They also do Egyptian cotton sheets at reasonable prices too.

I buy my pillows from Primark. I find their memory foam suits my needs perfectly.

About six years ago I bought some bedding from there, duvet cover, pillow slip and sheet, 100% cotton. I bought it because I needed something cheap, for use in the flat I was sharing while working away from home. It has proven to be a bigger bargain than anticipated. I still looks in good condition, but for the pattern, which has dated, it still looks good.

Their stuff can be surprisingly good, sometimes.

I bought their memory foam pillows. Nice and firm, but we can't sleep on them. We only use them for sitting up in bed or a head board buffer. We all (in this house), like the small buckwheat pillows. They have to be specifically small. Bit of a pain to get hold of. Can't really be done with normal size pillows, I'd rather not have one at all if that's all there is. Just need something to cradle my neck.

I think I have got most of it from TK Maxx as low low price, but I can't find the duvet cover.
Is there such a thing as a duvet cover protector, between the duvet and duvet cover? or is that not a thing, not not a thing that's needed?

Yes there is, I got mine from Dunelm when we bought our expensive duvet. They’re really good but the sizing between our duvet, duvet protector and duvet cover all seem off despite having the same dimensions. We ended up having to buy iron on poppers to stop everything bundling up on one end.

We’ve got a lovely Hungarian down duvet but it’s too hot now so we need a summer tog one. I don’t think I can go back to hollow fibre now so down it is and it’ll have to go on the credit card.

I heard that micro fibre is far better than hollow fibre. It's more breathable, less sweaty (more expensive) and closer to down.

I really like the wool duvet I bought last year.
It's light, very cosy, breathes, cool in summer...warm in winter, easily washed and dried.

Just checked...the one I got is now reduced to €29.99

This is the answer:

393 reviews, 338 of them 5 stars.

You can use one or other layer, or both, and thus get three levels of thickness, for the different seasons. And you can wash it at home.
