Where can I get food grade lye / saltpetre on the high street?

longdog

What is it you can't face?
Quite a few bread recipes I've been looking at recently include a 'boil in lye water' stage and though things have come out fine without I like experimenting...

And I want to make some nice pink salt-beef so some saltpetre would be nice :)

PS: I live in Hull which is pretty multi-cultural these days so there are plenty of <insert racial epithet here> shops :D

yeah, you want saltpetre for breadmaking. Thats entirely believable. Check some dung piles, the crystals in that make for better black powder

Why would I make black powder when I know how to make nitroglycerine, TNT and ANFO? :D

ViolentPanda? Seriously you'll probably need to go via a chemist and ask them to get it in for you. Or get it over the net

Lye water for cooking can sometimes be found in Asian shops.

We used to buy saltpetre at the chemists when I was a teen and make smoke bombs with it : thumbs:

Yep, saltpetre from the chemist, or from ebay or Amazon, where there are plenty of suppliers selling food-grade saltpetre.
