Are you back at work?

Very sorry to catch up with this thread and find out that various Urbans have their jobs in danger or about to stop :( :(

Biggest sympathies to all from this Civil Servant ;) -- I really hope that things end up working out better than you expect :)

Why the winky smiley?

To irritate you personally, and ultra-deliberately :p ;)

Clearly worked :)

(I was -- in reality -- actually quite upset/concerned last night to read that several people here have jobs going or in jeopardy, so if my attempt at sympathy actually did annoy anyone, my apologies :( ).

I started a new role on Monday, same firm just a different project, so I am in the office this week and next minimum. I asked for the change cos being at home was doing my head in a bit. It’s been great seeing colleagues (who have been in throughout) and the protocols in place are fantastic.

As an aside, the tube is a bit challenging, morning is OK as the missus drops me off at Aldgate and I get the Met line to my destination and it’s usually quiet enough and only the odd idiot not wearing a mask or wearing it wrong.

Got the Jubilee home the last cpl of days, Monday was fine but y/day jeez.. half of the fellow passengers were either not wearing a mask, had it under their nose or under their chin, one fella was chewing his, WTF.

What I did notice and it was quite obvious is 90% of those not adhering to the rules were Eastern European. 4 girls were sat in that middle section of 6 seats, all with their masks below nose or chin and all 4 engaged in a loud conversation and laughing etc.

I’ve really had to bite my tongue and I just move if I feel comprised.

How's doing shitty jobs mean you don't wear a mask properly?
I've had no furlough/no work and still can wear a mask correctly.
It doesn't mean that at all and it's disingenuous to phrase it like that. I mean if you've been stuck in a shit customer facing retail job for six months while the rest of the country gets to stay at home you may take the whole mask thing less seriously than other people. You say you've had no work so it's probably not quite the same.

So upset you had to add a smug wink as you're safe in your civil service job, must have been soooo upset!
Don't you see how that negated what you typed before?
Of course you won't admit that and get extra defensive, hurt and lash out now...

Was trapped at work abroad from 2nd March-2nd August (5 months at work)

on extended leave now but just got my next rotation details.

fly out 1st November, fly home last week of January (2.5 +months at work)

i’m Far enough away from the last trip to forget the misery, so this next trip doesn’t appear too painful just yet. I will report back in January when I’m losing my mind:D

TBH unless you're heading somewhere that has wandering hordes of zombie infected wandering the streets trying to cough on you and eat your face off you might dodge a bullet not flying back to the UK in January!

thats literally how I’m looking at it. I’m working, I’m at sea everyone has had two or three tests and a severe 14 days quarantine period where they are kept in a hotel room and food is delivered to the door followed by another test before they arrive in the fleet. Probably safest functional place to be.
missing Christmas is always my preferred MO

Why the fuck not lash out though?
You're the one being a totally nasty fucker here

Try and read this next bit properly though, please :

Here's a genuine suggestion : if you don't like my posts as much as that, have a quick think maybe, about putting me on ignore?

(Same applies to the three Urbans who -- for similar reasons? -- 'liked' the above ultra-petty-minded post from you :hmm: )

Putting me on ignore will end up looking a damned sight better to others (won't it??) than just being publicly nasty, petty, unpleasant, and quite frequently provoking/digging, and so fucking personally as that too :(

Simply because you don't like me all that much on here?

(All I was doing originally was trying to show some support to those going through job insecurity, etc.)

Apologies to all -- genuine -- for this derail :(

Exactly as predicted, sigh

You can do so much better -- as proved by some of your excellent posts about politics, Wales, veganism and other good stuff.

How is adding a smug smiley showing support, can you not see how it reads, at all?
But then even if you did you wouldn't let yourself admit it, just go off on one and call people nasty and ultra petty minded, nasty, pedantic, and give the perceived slight back tenfold.
Strange little attempt to dial it back too
E2a, and having a dig at others for agreeing/appealing to others to get involved. Lot of vitriol there eh!

just go off on one and call people nasty and ultra petty minded, nasty, pedantic,.

That was specifically aimed at you alone. But it was provoked -- read your previous post.

Seriously, ddraig, do your posts (especially above) make you read any more pleasantly and likeably than my posts?

This is an utterly shit derail :( and of course I've played my part  (sorry)
But FFS, at least I'm not coming across anywhere near as out-and-out nasty and hatefilled as (all) the above.

Like I said ddraig -- put me on ignore! Please! You obviously hate me far more than I want to dislike you.

Also like I said, you contribute great posts often enough. The above isn't one of them.

Sunak set to announce some guff to replace furlough later today. It will be 'creative & imaginative'. The industries where this will be needed will need the current 80% scheme to continue, any attempt to start up a French or German style hours-top-up scheme can't work for theatres, nightclubs, concert venues, travel companies (clearly the most important sector), events, hospitality and so on, businesses that can't operate until the government lifts the restrictions that are preventing them from operating.

I've managed to cling on to some work through all of this, incredibly. As I've been working freelance for the last few years, I have no back up/support at all. I had some interesting projects lined up this Spring - was supposed to go to Finland and France for some EU training. That all fell through, of course. Then I had a two month contract in Abu Dhabi. That was cancelled.

I switched to online teaching (hard work and terrible pay) and teacher training (hard work, decent pay, but not so much of it around) and then worked for a UK university all summer. I'd been hoping for an extension on my contract but recruitment was frozen this year. Now I'm doing a short contract with another university, which involves a study skills course for international students. Once that's over (next week), I have nothing lined up at all.

I've applied for at least 20 jobs. Most of them don't even bother to respond. I've even applied for a job at the job centre, which I don't especially want, but the pay is decent and it would be good to have a fixed salary coming in for a while. My heart sinks at the idea of it though. Can you all say a little prayer or something for me, hoping that something else falls into my lap before I am forced to work at the job centre? (That's if I even get through the next stage of the application process...)

It's all really shit because I had just started to build up networks and was freelancing for a big publisher in Turkey and was getting plenty of work. Meh.

I was going to put myself forward as a representative for my department for the redundancy consultation, but someone way better (ie much more assertive) has put herself forward so I'm not going to stand in her way - she's one of the few people I can imagine having the forcefulness to change anyone's mind on anything. Plus her team is in a much tighter spot than mine.

He's going French/German style. Businesses that are unable to operate due to government restrictions can't benefit, as a business not allowed to open can't put staff on reduced hours. Keeping the 5% VAT rate on hotels and dining will make no difference to anything at all.

Waaaaa waaaa, boo hoo poor wiwiam.
No one can criticise or even disagree with your posts.
Grow up and get a grip. Stop it man, seriously

Well, we were all called in today for a socially distanced meeting to let us know we were going to be made redundant. Either I am a right old thicko or the bumpf they gave out doesn't say how many redundancies there will be. This consultation process is supposed to take a month, so I presume things will become clearer. I won't be nominated for the consultation process because I'm not part of the office clique.

Surely everyone should be consulted!?!
Good luck with it

Thank you.
From what I can gather, each department has to nominate a spokesperson to go to the meetings with the big bosses and convey the info back to the rest of us. Then when it's all been thrashed out, each person will be called in for a one to one with their line manager.
