What's for tea tonight? (#8)

Yes, I live in China and never see brown rice available in restaurants, same in Korea, cos of the status. I make my own and take it with me when we eat at the canteen.

What's the status thing then? I reckon here the status points would be given to the brown rice chooser?

Ooh change of plan. It maybe salmon fillet with garlic on a bed of brown rice that has been cooked in stock.
Thanks @Biddilybee

What Frank said really. Polished white rice was traditionally for the rich, I suppose because it required more labour, so it became more desirable and thus chosen by everyone once it was available.

Weird thing is, brown rice is more expensive here. Turns out its because the low demand makes it more expensive to handle.

I have no idea if white rice is cheaper here as I've never bought it, but since it comes free at the canteen I suspect it is. Brown doesn't exactly break the bank though.

I took a pot of some kind of turkey and leek casserole out the freezer this morning. My mum made it while she was staying over christmas so not entirely sure what it is. Looks like there's potato in it aswell. Hope it's nice.

I also have a mum cooked tea tonight
She's picked the boy up from school and taken him to our house where she is cooking dinner for us all.
I don't know what it is, but I don't care because I don't have to cook it and it will be ready for me when I get home from work.
My mum is officially awesome :)

Pasta.
Pasta sauce made of chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli and the last remaining bit of chorizo.
I can't muster up much enthusiasm about it.

Gnocchi with green pesto, petit pois, spinach and griddles courgette ribbons.
Just chipping our way through the mound of mince pies and biscuits left over from Christmas- undoing all the good work of the healthy main course :)

Yer. I made a well good storecupboard stew over crimbo... Onion, potato, some grains, peppercorns, left over veg, a spoon of mustard, a bit of bacon and a can of borlotti beans. I topped it with a bit of cheese. It was surprisingly tasty :) How was pasta sauce?

Ended up with;

Softened some onion (which I didn't know we had) for a while and the added 4 cloves of garlic for a few mins.
Then some ground cumin, paprika and coriander (thank god always having a cupboard full of spices even when skint) to release the flavour for a few mins.
Then a can of chopped tomatoes, half a tube of tomato puree, a more than ample splash of shite red wine.
A load of dried parsley and some sliced chorizo (again that I didn't know we had in the bottom of the fridge vegetable tray) chopped in to small pieces.
I added a glug of Encona that was far to big for me but hey ho.
I am going to boil up some pasta and at the end add the tops of broccoli and asparagus (again, I thought it had been chucked due to being past it's best but it's just about OK).
Not had it yet but the sauce is nice and I am pleased for a not having anything meal :)

Sounds lovely kitty enjoy xx

Ends meals are the best! :) chilli con carne pizza was pretty fit tbh. We've frozen a load of it which will be turned into either chilli lasagna or chilli pie topped with spicy sweet potato mash
IME chili pizzas work best with a fairly thick, bready base, almost deep pan, with masses of cheese on top. Yes, on top.
