Unfortunately, I predict Trump supporters, members of his administration and the mainstream media will start going after the widow and family of Sgt Johnson and no doubt are already digging deep for any "dirt" to undermine his reputation.
Clearly the White House would like to brush the whole affair under the carpet as already, it's looking like an avoidable balls up with shit decisions up the chain of command. Even just recognising the dead men as "heroes" risks questions they want to avoid at all costs.
The Trump administration and his supporters have already shown they're prepared to push even the most extraordinary lies to justify the President's words and actions, so I have no doubt they'll gladly do the same in this case. I'm already seeing fans back Trump's denial that he said anything insensitive to Mrs Johnson on the phone, despite 2 other people being party to the convo in the car along with the congresswoman.
Sounds like he was what most Americans would call a "model citizen." Lived in the same community where he grew up, active in his church, did well at school, mentored younger kids, worked up from Walmart associate to the prestige of being a Green Beret within a few years, married a childhood friend, two kids and one on the way, etc.
But, white supremacists (whether in the White House or regular society) invest so much on the trope of African Americans as immoral, lazy, unintelligent, arrogant, violent, hyper sexual and criminal as "evidence" of their inferiority, to justify their marginalisation and explain why it's their own fault, not systemic racism, that they don't "get ahead."
An African American like Sgt Johnson, who appears to have been the opposite of this stereotypes, is a threat to their ideology, so they'll have to double down on efforts to trash him because they can't let this slide.
It's what they did with Obama - a Black guy who had the temerity not to live up to their stereotypes. When they couldn't find any dirt, they resorted to the "he was born in Africa" and the "he's a Muslim" lies that so many still cling to. Regardless of one's views on his policies in office, the strongest attacks on him were personal ones founded on racism.
I hope I'm wrong, but don't be surprised if you start seeing stories about a distant cousin who was a drug dealer, the candy bar Johnson shoplifted when he was 10, the teacher who remembers him getting in a fight, the disgruntled ex girlfriend's view, his social media post sympathetic of Black Lives Matters or taking the knee, his widow being "attention seeking" or "money grabbing," etc. If they can't find any goss, they'll just make it up. It's so easy to "misattribute" something bad that a different David Johnson did, then issue a faint "my bad" weeks after everyone has swallowed the lies. They'll get the result they want.
