Couldn't resist:

This isn't stupid shit that Trump has done, yet. It's stupid shit that there is every chance of him doing:
Harvey Could Be Trump's First Crisis That Isn't His Own Invention | HuffPost

The link between handling natural disasters and popularity/votes is interesting:

"Yet the success or failure of the combined effort can have a big effect on a presidency.

Obama was helped by his leadership in the immediate aftermath of “superstorm” Sandy, which hit New Jersey and New York just ahead of the 2012 presidential election. In 1992, President George H.W. Bush, already behind in his re-election race, was hurt by the federal government’s slow response to Hurricane Andrew’s direct hit on Miami. And 13 years later, Katrina’s strike on New Orleans and FEMA’s poor response was a major reason for the decline of son George W. Bush’s second-term effectiveness. The following autumn, Democrats retook control of both chambers of Congress."

It's hard to imagine that Trump's going to step up.

On Politico Trump falls behind in August push for tax reform
...
But some longtime tax activists question whether Trump’s leadership on the issue is that important.

“He’s not Mr. Communicator,” said Grover Norquist, president of the conservative group Americans for Tax Reform and the country’s most well-known anti-tax advocate.

“It is not necessary for him to sell this, it is necessary for him to agree with the House and Senate,” Norquist said.

White House aides have said that, as a businessman, Trump is naturally more interested in — and more knowledgeable about — taxes than other issues. That line emerged more strongly after the Republicans’ Obamacare debacle, and it may still prove to be true and a boost to tax reform.

The House GOP aide said Trump’s lack of engagement recently isn’t fatal to the tax reform effort. But Republicans will need cover when special interests bear down to protect their deductions and carveouts in the tax code.

“When we need you to be on message, can you be on message please?” the aide said, adding that he wished Trump were more focused like Ryan.

Steel said Trump “absolutely still has the ability to make the case on tax reform to his dedicated base of voters. And I hope he starts to do so vigorously.”
Trump did say “I hope some of the Democrats that are going to lose their election will come over and give everybody a big beautiful tax cut, which is going to be great for the economy,” the keyword there is "everybody". Which would be hugely fiscally irresponsible but pleases the punters at rallies. As in the Bush era GOP tax reform tends to focus on just being very fiscally irresponsible when it comes to the taxation burden of the "wealth creators" like Trump. He's always dog whistling to fire up his narrow base rather than focusing on selling tax reform. Having elected a self confessed billionaire "smart" tax avoider a lot of them are fine with the 0.01% getting a huge tax cut but it's not as salient an issue for them as immigration or bashing the liberal press and liberals in general. Trump himself does appear to have an elite tax fixation like a lot of wealthy chiselers but he's canny enough to play to his base's hottest issues. Despite the Queens Real Estate shark background it appears he's not agile enough to simultaneously work with the GOP in Congress. They are getting increasingly pissed off with this do nothing President.

Sounds like Texas has a scary few days ahead with Hurricane Harvey, which is forecast to hit the state today as the strongest storm in the area since Hurricane Katrina - hopefully Trump will learn from Bush's mistakes and not fuck up the federal response, but I wouldn't want my life to depend on it.

I can almost hear it now: 'we have the bigliest storms, no other President has brought ya hurricanes like this..." etc., etc.,

hello. I'm not a he. Don't think I was playing the victim either and still reckon 'what are you here' is pretty shit thing to say to anyone but I was drink-posting that night and happy to leave it there.

also please @ me next time you feel like having a pop its only polite.
To add more fully; most of your posts - and points - are pretty good, and well argued. Mine was just the mildest of objections to what I thought was an unneccessary and counterproductive tantrum. Sorry if I misread it.

It doesn't matter, his supporters will blame Obama for everything that will go wrong.

The Border Patrol has announced that unlike during previous evacuations, its checkpoints on major roads will stay open during the Hurricane Harvey evacuation, giving a lot of people the choice between risking drowning or risking deportation.

On Bloomberg Tillerson’s Commitment to Racial Diversity Has History at Exxon
...
"We need a State Department that reflects the American people, reflects who we are," Tillerson said in an August 18 speech to participants in the department’s student programs and fellowships in Washington. "The State Department must redouble our efforts to increase diversity at the highest ranks of the Department, including at the ambassador level."

Tillerson said he will ensure at least one minority candidate is considered for any new ambassador appointment, a public commitment to racial diversity that stood out after President Donald Trump was criticized by Democrats, Republicans and prominent CEOs for failing to unambiguously condemn violent neo-Nazi demonstrators in Virginia. Without mentioning Trump, Tillerson spoke about the importance of racial tolerance and opposition to bigotry, quoting George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
...
Interesting that Tillerson felt the need to say that.

The main fascist talking point on social media today is from the "yeah but, what about" file and focuses on some of Obama's pardons. Naturally there's a stack of false equivalences, but detail is for libtards innit.

"Sheriff Joe's" pardon is really shocking. I was only moderately aware of what he's been accused/convicted of. Actually reading into it, it's fucking shocking he was pardoned. The Phoenix times have been following his career for years (and one of its journalists was arrested and sued the sheriff's dept for millions)

On twitter there's a lot of false equivalency (and transphobia) comparing Trump and Arpaio with Obama and his pardoning of Chelsea Manning. How fucked up do you have to be to compare a whistleblower to a racist sadist?
