what does emily benn tell us about the state of politics

Are drones anything like sheeple?

No.
A "drone" is a backbencher who can be relied on by the whip's office to vote on party lines. The term has a long history, all the way back to the 1920s when Churchill used it to comment on supine tories who supported Baldwin come hell or high water.
"Sheeple" on the other hand, is a construct which places people within an armorphous mass of ignorance, liable to follow without thought. It's a construct used by intellectually-bankrupt people to denigrate anyone who doesn't act in the way that the intellectually-bankrupt person wants.

See? Nothing like. :)

I think William Ralph Inge was on to something when in his book England written in 1938 he said that the voting age should be raised from the then age of 21 to 25 so as to prevent "callow youth" having the vote. This Dean of St Pauls had kind things to say about Mussolini as well in the same book though so not everything about him was sound.

Times change and now callow youth is encouraged to stand as a Member of The House. Would that there be a maximum age for serving in Parliament - perhaps 40 like in the Services. MPs would all have to leave and start chicken farms as I understand happens with retiring servicemen and women. Emily Benn despite her relationship to Tony and Hilary is not part of any dynasty though. The party she has joined is not the one Tony joined years ago despite a similarity in part of its name. She also cannot have inherited any of his values because she would not be welcome in the current party. Hilary as far as I know just got involved because it was something he knew about. He has no left politics about him at all. That doesn't qualify as a dynastic succession.

A couple of points:
1) There's no poster called "vegansmac".?

i think we all know who i was refering to well the mods must have at least as the thread demonstrates

2) Thread search throws up five references to "conspiraloons" on this thread. Two posted by you, and three posts quoting yours. None by butchersapron.

In my book that makes you a liar.?

actually bucthersapron has made a reference to 'ike' on this thread did you do a thread search on that ? evidently not still and fyi he has used 'conspiraloon' on others often recently - other posters would be aware of this so you can stick your book where the sun dont shine oopps i forgot seeing as thats where you keep most of your ideas !

Some more points:
?

wow im honored

1) Name-calling people that you are accusing of "slurs and smears" is the work of a fool. You undermine any case you might have thought you had.?

so whats your excuse :D if name calling and smears is the work of a fool then i must be in the right company here on urban as it is a habit you bucthersapron nino to name a few indulge in readily and often

2) I'd love to see any evidence of the posters you name using "the issue of mental illness to stifle debate"..?

i was drawing attention to the fact that this occurs vp when someones sanity is questioned in relation to a topic under disscussion what do you think the purpose of it is ? it took an intervention by treelover who asked people to tone it down on a previous thread and i do not think that he was addressing his point to me as i was not the one who had started throwing insults based upon mental illness whihc leveas one culprit

i disgaree with a lot of posters on a lot of issues tho i doubt i have ever questioned there sanity just there judgement and when they have thrown there toys out of the pram as you and especially nino are apt at doing i flame grill you accordingly - i am admit that i do at least try to make the flaming a bit more entertaining for the neutrals rather than opting for the usual c word:rolleyes:

3) Could you please support your last sentence with any kind of evidence that the people you call "one line wonders" say or do anything that might promote recruitment by the right.".?

i think your confused which is the story of life 5/10 for misrepresentation - which you admit to on the other thread the one line wonder was a reference to posters who do not post on threads except for one line in which they usually do nothing but try and flame

my point about the far right has nothing to do with one line wonders - my point was the context with which those who deem themselves anti every ism under the sun adn who then exposes themselves as hypocryties - then start wondering why the far right are growing

You see, I'd absolutely hate for people to think that you, the great and pure "brasicritique", based their tirades entirely on "slurs and smears".?

Perhaps o ominpotent on eyou could actually show where i have said i am pure and great ? no?

in your book that makes you a liar!:D

im not a poster trying to set the world to rights according to marx or liberalism or anarchism these grand narratives are dead and the presevre of the wealthy imo i just think that it is wrong hypcocrtical and in the long term politically and soically damaging to play at treating people equally and shout about how your being discriminate dagainst and then start to use generalisations as other posters themselves do the more they do so the more the chickens will keep coming home to roost

That'd probably be insightful if it made any sense at all.

well heres looking at you kid...

What cards?
Is this the latest smear you've constructed, people and cards?

no its sarcasm and - a reference to your self appointed ominpotence and un declared physic abilities which you apparently share with others for example who know johny rotten is rasist becasue they 'just know things cos you er.. just do'

you use smears all the time so i think you should be able to take your own medicine!

How do you think these things up?

wouldnt you like to know then you could be a bit more creative as opposed to using the c word :p

Re Post 278

I find posts with intermittent comment interspersed with multiple quotes, as unreadable as those lengthy rants without paragraph spaces that some people write. Such private disputes could surely be kept to PMs.

To return to the topic, I think that there is a real problem with people of Emily Benn's age standing for Parliament and then becoming MPs.

There are far too many people who are elected as MPs who have never had a job outside the world of party politics, political think-tanks and lobbying. This applies to all the main parties.

People should get real-world experience that they can bring to politics before they can stand for election.

top post i think in the long run this going to be very damaging for the political process which call me a cynic is perhaps the point:(

She's 18. There aren't any 18 year olds in Parliament. It would be good if there were. They would know more about schools and being 18 than any other MPs.?

what private schools?

What conditions would you add to the present ones? Would you have a mnimum age higher than 18? It was 21 until recently. Would you have a special panel to say who had "enough" life experience to qualify?.?

thats not such a bad idea imo then we could find out who works part as ceo on which company and disccuss the whole conflict of interest issue

Charlie Kennedy was 23 when he got in, and he flew straight from Indiana University where he was studying. The only job he'd had since graduating was a stint with the BBC as a journalist. Yet the electors of Ross, Cromarty and Skye saw fit to vote him in, as to this day do the electors of Ross, Skye and Lochaber. Would you have ruled him out, so that a thirty-something accountant could have stood instead?.?

the difference being?

Or would you, like me, just leave it up to the electors to decide, by voting in an election?

your presuming that the electors actually have a choice but then again you probably think we are living in a democracy:rolleyes:

i think we all know who i was refering to well the mods must have at least as the thread demonstrates

actually bucthersapron has made a reference to 'ike' on this thread did you do a thread search on that ? evidently not...
You can't search 3 letter words.
...still and fyi he has used 'conspiraloon' on others often recently...
Who gives a toffee what he's written on other threads? You yourself claimed he'd done so on this thread.
...other posters would be aware of this so you can stick your book where the sun dont shine oopps i forgot seeing as thats where you keep most of your ideas !
Even your insults are scarcely worthy of being called mediocre! :)
wow im honored

so whats your excuse if name calling and smears is the work of a fool then i must be in the right company here on urban as it is a habit you bucthersapron nino to name a few indulge in readily and often
And yet...
i was drawing attention to the fact that this occurs vp when someones sanity is questioned in relation to a topic under disscussion what do you think the purpose of it is ? it took an intervention by treelover who asked people to tone it down on a previous thread and i do not think that he was addressing his point to me as i was not the one who had started throwing insults based upon mental illness whihc leveas one culprit
Well, isn't it odd how no-one else who read that "insult" took it in the same context as you did?
That couldn't be because you;re warping what was meant to fit your own agenda, could it?
i disgaree with a lot of posters on a lot of issues tho i doubt i have ever questioned there sanity...
Does asking whether you've taken your largactyl "question your sanity"?
Or was it me saying "you're talking babbling shite, calm down"?
As only you have taken it as me questioning your sanity, perhaps you might just have your head up your arse, eh?
just there judgement and when they have thrown there toys out of the pram as you and especially nino are apt at doing i flame grill you accordingly - i am admit that i do at least try to make the flaming a bit more entertaining for the neutrals rather than opting for the usual c word:rolleyes:
Which "c" word is that?
i think your confused which is the story of life 5/10 for misrepresentation - which you admit to on the other thread the one line wonder was a reference to posters who do not post on threads except for one line in which they usually do nothing but try and flame
Something you yourself do too.
my point about the far right has nothing to do with one line wonders - my point was the context with which those who deem themselves anti every ism under the sun adn who then exposes themselves as hypocryties - then start wondering why the far right are growing
Then why not make yourself clear first time out, rather than the gushing babble of shite you post and then have to clarify?
Perhaps o ominpotent on eyou could actually show where i have said i am pure and great ? no?
You haven't, and I haven't claimed that you have.
Same as I've never claimed to be omnipotent.
in your book that makes you a liar!:D
Read it again. :)
im not a poster trying to set the world to rights according to marx or liberalism or anarchism these grand narratives are dead and the presevre of the wealthy imo i just think that it is wrong hypcocrtical and in the long term politically and soically damaging to play at treating people equally and shout about how your being discriminate dagainst and then start to use generalisations as other posters themselves do the more they do so the more the chickens will keep coming home to roost
Well and good if you also apply your rules to yourself.
well heres looking at you kid...

no its sarcasm and - a reference to your self appointed ominpotence and un declared physic abilities which you apparently share with others for example who know johny rotten is rasist becasue they 'just know things cos you er.. just do'
I haven't got a sodding clue what you're on about with Johnny Rotten, and I don't particularly care. I've also told you that I have no psychic abilities and have never claimed to be omnipotent, but have it your own way.
you use smears all the time so i think you should be able to take your own medicine!
Of course I do, and of course you don't, brasic.
(That's sarcasm, by the way).
wouldnt you like to know then you could be a bit more creative as opposed to using the c word :p
Actually, I wouldn't.

Quote:
Ms Benn, who has been a Labour member since she was 14, said she had done "many weeks of work experience in the prime minister's political office in Downing Street, giving me the chance to see how policy is developed first-hand"

Well her mother Nita Clarke did work in Blair's Downing Streetbpolitical office from 1997 to 2007...NEPOTISM

Talking about young up and coming politicians, has anybody heard about the 17 year old SWP member who will work with the government in the Young Muslim Advisory Group?

This says a lot about the current state of the SWP. We have a privately educated member (who says her religion is "most important thing in my life") working with the government on furthering divisive multiculturalism.

The vanguard of the working class my arse.

Here's the group: http://www.nya.org.uk/information/113489/youngmuslimadvisorygroup/

If you can cut through the right-wing shit...

http://www.hurryupharry.org/2008/10/07/swp-activist-appointed-government-advisor/

As you can probably guess, the BNP have picked up on it claiming it "proves" New Labour is Marxist.

I know she's only 17 but surely it shows that the idea of recruiting "the best militants from the class" is a load of bullshit. They couldn't give a monkeys who they recruit.

Ta, (harry's place can stick it up their withchunting mccarhtyite arse btw.)

Don't the SWP have any control over their members nowadays?

At the last conference I went to, one girl stood up saying that in her Respect branch, she was trying to convince the 'Communists' (CPGB) that the parliamentary road to socialism was the right way. No one raised an objection.
