What coffee are you drinking just now?

I was extracting the last few beans of my Guatemala Los Cerritos from the bag on Sunday when I spotted that they'd either run out of labels or had supplied the espresso roast by mistake - so I'm looking forward to even better coffee over the forthcoming hostilities.

I bought 750 grammes which at 35 grammes per brew is only barely sufficient for the 21 days I will be home, but hopefully this will be my cue to start drinking slightly less ... hopefully I'll get myself sufficiently well organised to have tea some of the time - which goes better with winter-style cooked breakfasts - which reminds me I need to get organised in the bread-making department as for me, coffee and home-made bread are inseparable.

It tastes coffee-like enough for my needs, with none of the added jitters/panickiness that sometimes stems from the Proper Stuff w/me. I'm taking it for the team and drinking it so you don't have to :D

Even the posh suppliers usually do a decaf.

Introducing the Guatemalan Finca El Triangulo Decaf

Location: Huehuetenango, New Oriente & Fraijanes
Varietal(s): Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Pache
Processing: Fully Washed and patio dried
Decaffination Method: Mountain Water Process
Altitude: 1300 - 1850masl

This decaf coffee comes to us from Guatemala via Veracruz, Mexico where it is decaffeinated using the Mountain water process. This non-chemical process uses clear pure water from the highest mountain in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba to gently remove the soluble caffeine.

The balance of acidity and sweetness complimented by a subtle maltiness has this coffee standing up next to its caffeinted counterparts. In milk the espresso still sings through with mellowed lemon sweetness, and the lightness of the roast profile also makes the decaf suitable for use in a cafetiere, aeropress, pour-over etc...

In the cup: Lemon Meringue Pie
w/milk: A comforting cup of malty horlicks.

Stocked up for Xmas today with another one of HasBean's tried and trusted excellent starter packs:

  • Jailbreak Espresso Blend
  • Blake Espresso Blend
  • Kicker Espresso Blend
  • Jabberwocky Espresso blend
  • Brazil Fazenda Cachoeira Yellow Bourbon Pulped Natural
On the Jailbreak blend atm and it's really very nice.

Just broached a small bag of Brazillian Yellowbean Peaberry - lovely smooth, earthy, slightly smoky taste. Perfect New Year treat. :)

Not sure what the beans are, they came with our new Jura coffee machine above. (second hand) :D
The Gaggia machine has been demoted to wolfie's office.

That reminds me Shirl, I've got an espresso machine sitting in its box somewhere that I've not used for years. I originally bought it for work, so I could keep my caffeine levels up, but it was too much faff to use often, and some colleagues whinged about the noise the compressor thing made when it pressurised the system.

Should dig it out and give it a go again - it did make a pretty mean espresso that made me a bit lively.

At the moment I've got a cup of instant coffee on the go. So take me outside and shoot me coffee fiends. :p

Get your espresso machine out again. Let your colleagues whinge if they want to and get yourself some decent coffee.
Our machine dominates the kitchen (that ugly just doesn't usually sit on it) but I love it. It even switches itself on at 7.30am so it's warmed up and ready when I get back with the dogs :D

Back to work on Monday and I'm down to my last 125 grammes of Guatemala beans -so I have just enough for today, tomorrow and the weekend - so I got it just right.
My roasters roast on a Tuesday morning, so my order will arrive at work ready for next weekend.
So it's back to the naughtiness of one open 250 gramme bag hanging around for a month.
Perhaps I should buy some teeny tiny jars to decant it into ...

Truth be told I don't have that sort of palate and the bags are pretty airtight apart from the CO2 vent ...

I'm back at work after 3 weeks at home drinking coffee every day.
I'm not sure why I never drink tea at home. I know why I never drink coffee at work - I simply get too wired.
Even though I calculate I ingest 400mg of caffeine in my coffee and 700mg of caffeine in my tea.

Anyway. I finished the Guatemala Cerritos from Extract and have this time around reverted to my more usual supplier - Twoday Roasters - the first time I've tried mail order - I usually haul myself up a fecking great hill on my bike and combine the trip with a visit to a fancy health food shop and thence to a picnic at Ashton Court or home via Sainsbury's ...

But it's cold and I can now get my fancy veggie food locally.

The only thing I really need at the moment is Grey Poupon mustard - and I don't fancy visiting Big Tesco just for that - though I sort of want to try out a fancy office chair at IKEA ...

Anyway ...

Guatemalan Coffee: Cup Of Excellence La Maravilla

La Maravilla embodies perfectly what makes COE coffees so desirable, it's excellent fruity notes are held perfectly in balance with sweetness. It is this balance that makes customers keep coming back to it, one cup is simply not enough. It is the understatement of quality. In the cup you can expect toffee apple with sweet citrus.

The Grower

La Maravilla is a farm outside of the small town of La Libertad in the region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. It is a recent endeavour, as these things go, having come into existence in 1997 when Guillermo and Mauricio Rosales bought about 20 hectares and with the help and encouragement of neighbours began the process of producing world class coffee. By 2004 the father and son duo had their own wet mill and water treatment facility this along with more land meant that they could also provide accomodation for their seasonal workers.

Varietal:Bourbon/Caturra

Processing: Washed

£19 delivered for 500 grammes.
The shop owner would be very cross if he knew I was buying enough for 15 brews - or 7 weeks - but I'm not that keen on shopping - and I'm embarrassed that the post room at work has to deal with so much of it - so I try to have as few separate deliveries as possible.

£1.21 a mug - stuff you Starbucks - or my local deli come to that with their big jars of stale beans...

Been (bean?) getting the Pact coffees delivered, but decided I can't really tell the difference between a £6.50 bag of beans and a cheaper one from a supermarket, so I got some Starbucks Dark Expresso Roast beans from Tescos, for £2.75, and they had sent me a coupon for £1 off, so it was only £1.75, and I quite like it, nice caramelly taste.

My supplier was out of the Guatemala, so I opted for Mexican instead.
I felt guilty because 350g is presumably under "parcel" threshold and if I hadn't been watching my CCTV, the postman would have had to take it back to the sorting office.
It was just slightly too big to go through the letterbox.

Not what I'm used to - slightly darker roast - probably would be described as "fruity" - so all middle and top.
If I'd known, I might have ordered some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to mix with it as I found that one lacking in punch ... or perhaps opted for something else - I really do like Guatemalan coffees the best.

I'm home for another week, so perhaps I'll get used to it.

El Salvador COE #7~La Gloria

£4.45 per 100g delivered, approx £1.33 per 30g mug.

Very well balanced - but without being "Mellow Birds" - a shame I probably spoiled it with overly-hot water and over-extraction. :hmm:

Thinking about it, that's about the same as I spend on only moderately good French wine - £5 a bottle, lasts about 4 days ...

Nice but a bit rich for me, this one, I've decided. Came as one of Hasbeans starter packs, though, so good value nonetheless.

I went to a café yesterday and had the best cup of coffee I've ever tasted in my life. I can't remember what it was (helpful I know!) Anyway, I heartily recommend Full Court Press in Bristol.

My bro bought me a 6 month subscription to square mile for my birthday, so its Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Reko, lurvlee, caramel and fruit yum.

now that Hasbean are charging more for their postal deliveries - does anyone know where i can purchase some decent roasted beans from?

Pref in Farringdon or Streatham?
Saw Workshop Coffee but those prices seem a tad silly tbh...
