Volcano and Earthquake watch

Magma is continuing to accumulate ...

predicting another eruption or dyke/sill intrusion event within two to three weeks.

Their met office are trying to offer more detailed predictions these days, and various data including increase in earthquakes caused them to issue a forecast on the 30th, one forecast after the one you probably read, that says the next 7-10 days likely:

A video about this:

Just coming here to update, but elbows beat me to it ...

with their prediction of in the next 7-10 days ... I'm going for an eruption starting around the 6-8th August 2024 !

Nice timelapse.

Thanks elbows - I missed the start, as I had hit the hay a bit earlier than usual last night.
[due to the weather forecast - very wet & windy]

I presume that fissure's in the usual place !

oh, that's not a good headline.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province

Still at it - decent ash column{s} in progress yesterday [Thursday 7th Nov 2024]

They really got caught out by things like low seismic activity in the days leading up to this latest eruption. Indeed the following computer translation is from an update that was only recently published, on the 19th, oops!

It remains the opinion of the Norwegian Meteorological Agency's scientists that it is unlikely that enough pressure will have built up to trigger an eruption in November. One of the things that supports that assessment is how little seismic activity is measured in the area. If the rate of landslides in Svartsengi changes or there is a significant increase in seismic activity, this estimate will change accordingly.

They got that wrong - I mean the idea that there wouldn't be another eruption just yet [before the end of November].

This is one of the risks of relying on previous patterns when forecasting the next eruption. This time the system underground clearly allowed things to reach the surface without a prolonged period of increases in seismic activity, unlike a number of previous eruptions around this area.

It sounds like they still got some very short-term notice, eg in the hour before this eruption, via indications that still remained effective, eg increased pressure at power plant boreholes.

Hope they've buried the hot water pipes etc properly !

The lava has already gone over the main Grindavik road and killed an OHL [electric] route.

Yesa it looks like the pipes survived ok this time.

The lava travelled further west than previously and ate the Blue Lagoon carpark, which was just beyond the defensive barriers. Slow pushing of the lava up against the barriers was a threat, so they have resorted to measures such as cooling the lava by spraying water at at. After the eruption fissure was reduced to three distinct areas of eruption, it sounds like the central one was producing the lava that travelled west, and activity from that one now seems to have stopped. There may still be some further unseen travel of lava below the surface in the western area, but it seems likely they have done enough to stop the defences from being overwhelmed.
