Their met office are trying to offer more detailed predictions these days, and various data including increase in earthquakes caused them to issue a forecast on the 30th, one forecast after the one you probably read, that says the next 7-10 days likely:

They really got caught out by things like low seismic activity in the days leading up to this latest eruption. Indeed the following computer translation is from an update that was only recently published, on the 19th, oops!

It remains the opinion of the Norwegian Meteorological Agency's scientists that it is unlikely that enough pressure will have built up to trigger an eruption in November. One of the things that supports that assessment is how little seismic activity is measured in the area. If the rate of landslides in Svartsengi changes or there is a significant increase in seismic activity, this estimate will change accordingly.

They got that wrong - I mean the idea that there wouldn't be another eruption just yet [before the end of November].

This is one of the risks of relying on previous patterns when forecasting the next eruption. This time the system underground clearly allowed things to reach the surface without a prolonged period of increases in seismic activity, unlike a number of previous eruptions around this area.

It sounds like they still got some very short-term notice, eg in the hour before this eruption, via indications that still remained effective, eg increased pressure at power plant boreholes.
