Tyre place Brixton Hill on fire!

b/f said the place was absolutely deserted. Can't see police or fire vehicles.

Strangely though, he saw a woman with pram walking up Jebb Avenue.

You couldn't go up there this morning so whether they're opening it up or not

b/f's just gone outside for a look.

Apparently EVERYTHING barring maybe one fire vehicle has been pulled right back, although another vehicle has just gone in, possibly to deal with gas cyclinders

Policewoman said there was suspected gas cylinders, and as they thought that this morning, and still think so, that's a bit worrying.

In hindsight it was an accident waiting to happen wasn't it?
Thousands (?) of tyres stacked up on a derelict petrol station. Without any fencing or shit like that. Probably a few batteries and hazchems lying around too.

yeah, hope they cleared out any petrol before they moved in :D

We thought maybe Seamus had an accident with the barbecue :D

My place stank this morning. My initial thought was that Negril had kicked their barbie off a bit early.

But as I cycled past the prison I was told they'd cordoned it all off because the gas cylinders next to the prison were in danger. I presume they mean ones in the old art decoey place on Jebb Avenue. I always wondered what was in there.

Too right - it was shocking to see flames that size so close to residential areas.

Still loads of people walking down Helix / Arodene road, so assume Brixton Hill still closed.

Where EXACTLY do you mean?

Hey Minnie - If you're wandering up Brixton Hill and turn right down Jebb Ave, there's a kind of weird building on the right (opposite the prison) around the back of the tile (not 'tyre') place.

There's the car repair shop (old A23 Tachograph Centre), but down the side, there used to be what looked like a glass factory, but also what seems to be some kind of conference facilities storage place.

Am often woken at ridiculous hours of the morning by the noise of them unloading their lorries. Not sure exactly what building you're talking.

Part of the Waterworks?

Yeah, maybe that's it. In fact, I think it is a water-works.

Strewth, just seen Hassan's footage...

No wonder my bathroom 'smelt a bit iffy'.

Here's a camera snap of the smouldering remains. Brixton Hill now open on opposite side of road for pedestrians. Still closed to traffic, and fire still going in places.

I live 100 yds or so away from that. I looked out my window at midnight and didn't realise anything was wrong, just htought the road was quiet. Slept right through it, didn't notice anything til I stepped out of the gate and saw everyone walking. I'm rubbish.

It's what used to be Basement Jo's

Now it's called Negril and they have a barbecue set up outside.

Makes you hungry walking past it
Same with the new jerk chicken place by red records
At least it masks the smell of piss down behind there :)

Thanks everybody for the info. Probably more than I am getting from the Brixton Control Centre, but they are being pretty decent and straight up about it although info seems to trickle very slowly.

Just an update - another meeting is now planned at 4.30pm. I am still evacuated and they reckon it might be another 24-48 hours before i can return to my flat, but I am getting conflicting info so who knows?

There is definately a cylinder(s) involved. The problem they have also is that because it was a petrol station before, they have nothing on record to show the tanks underneath were drained and so they need to check that also.

Can anyone tell me whether the church or printers had any fire damage, I would rather not disclose where i live but this would have some bearing. I am staying quite far away now and dont wanna journey down there unless there is access

I really appreciate the info so far
