Tyre place Brixton Hill on fire!

Anyone know if it has affected the Brixton Arts Space next door? I have dance classes there.

Thanks everybody for the info. Probably more than I am getting from the Brixton Control Centre, but they are being pretty decent and straight up about it although info seems to trickle very slowly.

Just an update - another meeting is now planned at 4.30pm. I am still evacuated and they reckon it might be another 24-48 hours before i can return to my flat, but I am getting conflicting info so who knows?

There is definately a cylinder(s) involved. The problem they have also is that because it was a petrol station before, they have nothing on record to show the tanks underneath were drained and so they need to check that also.

Can anyone tell me whether the church or printers had any fire damage, I would rather not disclose where i live but this would have some bearing. I am staying quite far away now and dont wanna journey down there unless there is access

I really appreciate the info so far

Pacha - b/f's gone to bed now but I rang him half hour ago and they have opened up the opposite side of the Hill to pedestrians. He said that about the petrol, that the hole underground should have been filled with concrete and there could still be fumes there even though it's not been a petrol station for years. Certainly don't remember anything happening after its sudden closure so it's quite feasible

As for Brixton Art Space, I very much doubt you'll be allowed there

Here was the scene 15 minutes ago:

It seems the surrounding buildings have escaped relatively unscathed - just signage and guttering that seems scorched and molten. There are even some un-burnt tyres still there on site.

As you can see, pedestrians are allowed down the opposite side of the road, and there are crews actually in the building hosing down the final hotspots, so I can't see how they would justify a continued evacuation.

I'll try ringing my friend. He works at the printers

Have just rung friend who works in the printers. He had day off work anyway, but even if he didn't, the place wasn't operating as they'd cut the electric off

I absolutely love that 3rd picture showing central London in the background
I have ALWAYS wanted to take that picture! Everytime I drive down Brixton hill. Today was the obvious opportunity :)

There's still an almost carnival atmosphere with neighbours out in the road chatting.

I tried doing it last night but the guys that are doing the roadworks made me go over to Rush Common

It was a very sudden turnaround wasn't it? I thought the place was just a squat at first.
Maybe some Lambeth bureaucrat didn't do their job right.

I've nicked it as my desktop wallpaper... it's great!!

I was going to, but I was going to be nice and ask if he minded.

Not sure I like all those people in the picture either. It looks even busier than normal with all those pedestrians :D

I can't figure out how you did that. Are you standing on a wall or something.

I can see you're probably opposite the Elm Park bus stop but what position - EXACTLY

I'm sure there's a discussion about it somewhere and someone, probably Lang Rabbie, mentions something about something

but obviously I can't remember anything :D

Yep, I knew it was Lang

It looks as though the tyre centre has been operating without planning consent - an application (05/02347/FUL) for change of use from a petrol station to a tyre retailer and fitting centre submitted last July was only "validated" in February - presumably some key documents were missing. This was also turned down by the planners on 20 April.

:D

I'd be flattered if you chose it as a desktop! Here's another angle... The WPC was standing at the Elm Park entrance, and I was further up by that continuation of Rush Common, zoomed right in.

I'll tell you what: you can't fault the coverage of local events in this forum: long distance shots, close ups, action shots, aftermath shots, videos - we've got 'em all here!

That 15+ police car incident the other day was amusing simply for all the camera phones being used. It looked like the red carpet on Oscars night.

I massively under-use this site too, but always remember to check it if I want to find out something.... I enjoyed reading the posts after the Lambeth Country Fair last year :) I will try and go again this year, and perhaps take the camera with me.

Anyone know if the Hill's open to traffic again yet?

Nope, it's not. Busses on diversion through Acre Lane, driver said it could take anything up to 45 mins to get to St Reatham.
