Tyre place Brixton Hill on fire!

Got to be a bit suspicious hasn't it?

I mean, tyres aren't exactly easy to set ablaze.

definitely. Either an insurance job or some kids lobbed a petrol bomb maybe.

I really hope the guard dog wasn't there, although I doubt it as I haven't seen him for months anyway. :(

Saves on getting rid of all those fucked tyres. Must have saved the owners a fortune.

someone dumped a load of tyres on one of our estates in hackney wick. and set them alight:mad: like you say, saves a fortune on legally getting rid of them, we had to get a specialist firm in, so it cost us a fortune...

ah well, at least you haven't got to divert to get to Brixton. Think I'll have to either go to Tulse Hill, or round the back of the prison.

oh, and it doesn't look like you've got the smoke either. It's rank

A replay of the tyre yard on Tulse Hill going up last year then!!

A pretty mad weekend all round! To add to Editor's list - aggro on my estate, a near fatal RTA and a 2nd fire on Brixton Hill on Saturday (I heard).

Craft club went to the decidedly hippy-fest open day at the community greenhouses in the park yesterday - join in and enjoy drumming, violining, herb walks, plants, homemade food and all round chilled-out random chatting with various people - it felt very green-fields at Glastonbury (or Dubversion's own individual nightmare - :D ). We commented then that it's great that we have so much of that sort of thing in Brixton - it balances out some of the madness that sometimes happens.

tyre smoke is fairly toxic as well isn't it?

not sure, but it certainly had me choking the rest of the night and we only really got it in us when we were walking back up to the flat.

Luckily, the majority of the time at the moment, it's blowing right (as I don't know my NSEW). When there's a guest of wind though, we're directly in its path

I'm sure even my pillows smelled of rubber last night

Just rang my boss to say I was going to be late in. She said "what is it this time?"

Not my fault the Victoria Line was fucked up all last week :D

Here's the video - hope it works... it was taken only minutes after the first fire crews had arrived.

What time was that? I didn't get down 'til way after it had started. Heard sirens but thought it was those scallies in SW9 kicking off again. Then just assumed it was all the sirens on Thelma and Louise

I got there around 11.45pm - it was totally out of control and a very daunting sight. Someone mentioned there might be gas cylinders, but I reckon we would have been evacuated by now if that is the case.

where do you live?

We got there I assume, just after the roof buckled as we heard it give way just as we were leaving the house

Helix Road - I was on my way back from the tube station. The first fire engine passed me as I crossed the one-way system by the Fridge. When I got to the fire, there were only two there, and one police car.

Hi, just thought i would post this. Live 'very' close to tyre place and it was a serious blaze. Never experienced anything like it before. Was very scary to say the least. Wont be able to get into my flat for 24 hours :(
Was a mighty blaze, sitting in my front room and thought it was one of those cleaning trucks with the orange light flashing but started to really light up the room and ran out to see what was happening and flames must have been 100+ft tall. Not sure if Church was damaged but the roof behind the tyre place was alight. Police came to evacuate us after about 10 mins. just grabbed what i had and still waiting for updates. If anyone in the area can they please let me know when the area is accessible, thanks!

I'll be popping out soon... will get back to you (people have stopped walking down Helix Road now, so Brixton Hill may be open again to pedestrians at least).

hope the neighbouring buildings don't catch... or the furniture depot behind...

That would be very bad luck. Their store in Crystal Palace burned down about 3 years ago.

Just got back. The Cordon is still in place, but the officer told me there is a meeting taking place now to discuss whether it can be lifted.

First thing this morning, people could still get down Brixton Hill on foot, but they discovered gas cylinders at 7.30 am and had to evacuate everyone. They have been spraying the cylinders to cool them, and don't think they are flamable (probably compressed air being a tyre place) and it looks like that has been successful as the fire crews are back on site.

The fire is still burning though. The officer could not tell me whether other buildings have been damaged, but an office worker who works next door reckons some of the warehouse buildings behind went up too.

I live pretty close by and just popped out for a look around. It's still all cordoned off. Quite a lot of people walking along Elm Park and down Arodene Road by way of a diversion.

Actually there's quite a good atmosphere on the the streets round about, people have put chairs out on the pavement and are enjoying the sunshine and the general air of "stuff happening"...

That said, being a bit of a pyromaniac it's a bit frustrating not to be able to see the fire itself (according to the police it's still burning) ... and that I missed out on it all happening last night!

Luckily didn't get any smell or smoke up in Tulse Hill though we sure as hell got the traffic jam that goes with it. I've never seen the area so clogged in my life. Even on a bike it took me ages just to clear the Brixton Hill/A205 crossroads.

I'll ring my b/f in a minute to stick his head out the window to see if anyone's being let Brixton Hill any further than Elm Park.
