Tottenham Hotspur 2022-23

20 years of mediocrity yet still got the brass neck to punt it to Spurs
Arsenal have won the fa cup 6 times in the last 20 years, compared to tottenham's 7 in the whole of spurs' history. And few people would describe being unbeaten in a season as a year of mediocrity. What would you see as a successful season - 4th?

Still banging on about the invincible season  Pires cheated for a pen Vs Portsmouth very late on in a game. Proper egregious, totally cheated. And which top teams care about the FA Cup anymore? It’s almost as bad as the International break, almost

Invincible in name only, and you’ve never managed to defend the PL title.

Even J-Lings won the FA Cup with a ‘worldie’ as they call em

i wouldn't 'bang on' about the invincibles season now if some gobshite hadn't brought up '20 years of mediocrity'. most clubs in the premiership would give their eyeteeth to have one of arsenal's mediocre seasons. as for 'which of the top teams care about the fa cup any more?', tell me when spurs become one of them

who's banging on about the 2003/4 season now? anyway, come back to me when you've won a premier league title and then we can see how you go about defending it.

Danjuma in on loan. Rapid, direct left-winger/forward who scored a few for Bournemouth a couple of years ago then kicked it up a notch in Spain.

Seems like an upgrade on Lucas (quality player but mostly unavailable this season, father time catching up with him early) - we've had one attacking option on the bench at best recently, so an 'any 3 from 5' seems like a good way to go. Now a centre half and a right wingback please (or give Spence a proper go!).

Djed Spence going on loan to Rennes - no option to buy, so presumably the club is looking at game time for him to test whether Spence is up to the first team next season.

Matt Doherty joining Atletico Madrid (!!!) on loan.

And completing "right back day", Pedro Porro joining from Sporting on an initial loan with a £40m obligation to buy in the summer. Very attacking player, a specialist wing-back - or as I like to call it, the complete opposite of his competition for the spot in Emerson Royal.

Outside of full-backs, one other name in the frame. Piero Hincapie (Ecuador), 20yr old left-footed centre back from Bayer Leverkeusen - very highly rated, presumably a longer term alternative to Clement Lenglet.

I like Porro and have enjoyed his games for Sporting .However, his defensive side really needs some coaching but he's young enough to learn and Conte is imo a good coach.

Conte is a defence first coach, so there will be plenty of opportunities to develop that side of his game.

Btw Portuguese tv sports news have just mentioned possibility of Oliver Skipp going to Benfica if Enzo goes to us . Highly speculative.

In injury time...

10 men hanging on but wow this has been an immense performance. The front 3 have been a constant threat on the break, Bentancur has been superb, even Emerson Royal has had a 90 minute long running battle with Grealish and has come out on top.

Man of the match though is Hojbjerg by a mile, the adrenaline going through that man's veins must be through the roof. He's been everywhere, a genuine 10/10 performance.

Final whistle, get in!

Also Harry Kane, Spurs' all time record goalscorer. Hat doffed.

The legend of Harry Kane was born tonight. Ok, so it was the UEFA cup against not up to much, but a hatrick is some performance and to volunteer to go in goal, get in lad :)

Posted in 2014 about 20yr old Harry Kane after the game against Asteras Tripolis, a game also memorable for an outrageous Eric Lamela rabona from 20 yards. Good times!

and no Conte :hmm:

Interesting tactical ploy yesterday, would love to know whether this came from Conte in his hospital bed or from the team on the day. Match of the Day 2 did a short piece on this as well, so it wasn't just me who noticed.

The 3-4-2-1 becomes a back 5 when the opposition dictates possession, as City were always likely to do. This leaves the midfield 2 of Bentancur and Hojbjerg isolated against (often) a midfield 3 (sometimes even 4 yesterday when Lewis moved inside alongside Rodri and Bernardo Silva, with Alvarez dropping deeper). The previous version we've tried to combat this is a 3-5-2 with Bissouma playing; it works in terms of matching up numbers, but isolates the front 2 and reduces the effectiveness of the counter attack, i.e. we get wave after wave coming towards us with less of an out ball to work with.

Instead, Dier played virtually as a midfielder, sweeping up in front of the 2 marking defenders rather than behind them. His presence around the City link players (Silva and/or Alvarez, De Bruyne when he came on) let Bentancur and Hojbjerg put much more pressure on the ball higher up the pitch without worrying that a missed tackle or being passed around would open up 50 yards to run at our defence, which is of course how our goal came about.

4-1-2-3 out of possession, 3-4-2-1 in possession. We looked sharp in that fluid shape yesterday, maybe the blueprint for the future? My only worry would be that it leaves each wingback with a straightforward 1 v 1 against their winger, and Emerson Royal won't always be as brilliant as he was against Grealish. It's possible too that Hojbjerg won't always play as if possessed by the spirit of every scandi warrior through history.

Dreadful against Leicester, and Bentancur out for the season with an ACL injury. His obvious replacement in Bissouma is out for a good few weeks. Hojbjerg also unavailable against AC Milan.

We're going to the San Siro with a midfield pair of Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr. One day we might look on that as a good combo, but looks just a bit raw right now. The only other option is Eric Dier, who's barely played there in 3 years.

Was in the San Siro on Tuesday night. I was last there over 20 years ago and its decline is sad to see (I know it’s scheduled for demolition). Still awesome to see from outside, the home fans put on a great display with their tifo’s and general noise. The ‘facilities’ in the away end were non-existent. Kept in for an hour at the end to boot.

No hint of trouble over the two days I was there though, Milan & Spurs fans getting on well. Even the Italian Carbineri behaved!

The football. Hhmmm. Two very average sides going at it - I dread to think what Bayern might have done to either 😬. Positives - Sarr/Skipp acquitted themselves very well - the former my MotM. Think we should have enough at WHL. Negatives - Son (again - looks lost), Lenglet, Peresic and Kulusevski all out of sorts.

Real bemusement in the away end over the lack of minutes for Richarlison. Conte seems like a disinterested lame duck right now. Unsure at this point whether Spurs will find any form this season. I think if the cup runs end, that’ll signal the end for Antonio

I think the club's perspective on Conte looks fairly indifferent, because there's a very obvious candidate to take over sat out of work. If Poch had taken any one of the big jobs that have come up over the last 12-18 months (Chelsea, Man Utd, Real Madrid) then the landscape would look very different, Levy and Co would be moving heaven and earth to keep Conte, but the whole attitude as it stands seems a bit "meh".

Personally I rate Conte and I can see what he's trying to do with personnel and tactics, but there's definitely a part of me that would love to see what Poch can do - the same squad with only a couple of tweaks, playing with the handbrake off.

I vote for handbreak off
Agreed. Poch was always a fluid 4-2-3-1 guy (think Kane, Son, Dele, Eriksen) but I'd like to see the 3-4-2-1 done in a more progressive style because it suits the players. One of the midfield 2 linking defence and attack, the wide forwards playing narrower to give space to run into for flying wing-backs, that kind of thing. High turnovers, make it quicker and snappier.

Don't know if I'm reading too much into it but the win against City had Conte uninvolved and the attacking looked better. Possible coincidence but #ConteOut obvs
