111/150 still a few classics to see. How did you do? Any notable omissions?

Was glad to see God Told Me To in there.

I’m missing 25.
A lot of them were pre-1980’s (primarily but not limited to 50’s) or foreign.
Although I still knew lots in those categories.

Got to about 90 before being so pissed off by adverts I sacked it off.

My first thought from looking at that list is while I am not a massive fan of sci fi, I’m also not sure if there are 150 list worthy films and calling some of them sci-fi would be a stretch

I'm sure similar lists have been done before and similar lists will be done again, but with 150 films it covers almost all the obvious choices and plenty of less obvious ones. As is always the case with these ranked lists anyone could quibble that this film is better than that film and how dare they put such and such so high/low and what about...

But I've enjoyed digging through and reading the write ups, making me think I want to watch that! Oh I never got round to that one! That one was shit! I haven't seen that for years, must watch it again! Which is the whole point of the thing.

I fucking love sci fi films.

Anyway, getting into the spirt of things: how can they they have Quatermass and the Pit but no Quatermass Experiment or Quatermass 2, when they're clearly better to anyone with eyes, ears and a brain? The bastards

In my opinion, quite a few in that list are not great. Some aren't even science fiction.

I said a few - i didn't put a number on it.
Yeah that was my take too, but I’ll freely admit sci-fi isn’t my favourite genre and I don’t go out of my way to watch sci-fi films :)

I was just continuing the conversation as Elpenor implied that he could not conceive of more than 150 great scifi films worthy of being on such a list, which would be absurd

the desire to make a list is strooooongggg....
heres my favourites - lots of very good films i like not on here, but these are bonafide favourites would happily watch again without skipping...eg. all the Alien films are very good but I wont go out of my way to ever see them again. Italcised ones werent on the RS list I dont think, plus ive included a few tv shows

2001: A Space Odyssey
Brazil (if it counts as sci-fi - just about)
Solaris (1972)
Blakes 7 TV Series all of it
Mystery Science Theatre 3000 all of it
Hitchikers Guide Original TV Series
Dune (The Lynch One)
Sleeper
Star Wars first two
Akira
Flash Gordon
Stalker
Dark Star
All the Predator + AvP films including Prey which was good
Dredd (2012)
Total Recall
Planete Sauvage / Fantastic Planet
Star Trek Next Generation
Red Dwarf
The Day the Earth Stood Still

What’s the quibble about Brazil?

doesnt feel like sci-fi to me...not enough space in it - more an alternative reality

also Time Bandits is great but thats fantasy shirley
alternative reality is scifi though.
And why is Time Bandits not scifi but fantasy horror. All scifi is fantasy

one film that never comes up on lists even of cult films is
...people in Poland love this, its like Life of Brian for a certain generation. It deals with sexual politics including the slobishness of men - and is a dig at totalitarianism - its a scifi comedy made in the communist era - havent seen it in years but may be worth a watch if you're looking for something different....
