Tog Rating for duvets?

We have just bought an enormo-bed and a wealthy in-law has offered to buy us a moving in present - so we thought we'd get a really really nice duvet after years of really crap ones.

So looking at these from M&S:

I'm not really sure which tog to go for. Obviously now it's getting warmer and our house seems to be really rather warm anyway (despite everyone warning us it would be cold?) but then obviously in winter we'd want something snuggly. My instinct says 10.5.

What's the best all round tog?
 
I've heard it said that if you have central heating you shouldn't get more than 10.5.

Minnie will tell you to get an all seasons one. I think those are like two quilts and you detach one in the summer.

I find 10.5 a bit stingy in winter but I sleep on my own. I'd rather have a duvet that was a bit warm and that you could stick arms and legs out of if needed. Really expensive duck duvets are very good at not overheating you anyway by some special miracle of feathers

^^^This, although I got the all seasons down & feather duvet from Argos (not John Lewis) when one of the DLA backpayments came through, and it's been worth every penny. :)

Argos do a perfectly decent range as well for those that can't afford £1000 :D
 
I would go for those 2 in 1 ones, is that an all seasons one?? Depends on how warm your house is and how warm you like to be in bed imo. We have a 15 tog winter duvet, think the spring/autumn one is 12.5 but not sure and the summer one is 10(.5)

I don't really pay attention, can you tell? :)

VP still spluttered when I told him how much I'd paid for it (that's right, I paid for it out of my share!). :rolleyes:

But it's so much lighter than a synthetic duvet (less painfully heavy over sore limbs) and it never gets as clammy, so it only took him a couple of weeks to concede that it was well worth it. :D
 
I have an all-seasons popper job from John lewis, not one of those £££ ones though :eek: it was bought as a Christmas present a few years back so I bloody hope it didn't cost that much. I think the two together are 13.5 tog, I haven't had to use it like that since I lived in a house with central heating tbh but it was great when I didn't. I have the 9 tog one on all year round in this flat, if I remember and it's really hot in the summer I'll stick the 4 tog one on instead but I prefer the weight of the thicker one.
 
I recently had a vomit episode which gave me a choice of dry cleaning or buying anew. I bought one from tesco, no idea what filling, what tog... might have been 12.5 .. but it works and is comfy so that's all that I need really.
 
Duvets then are perhaps like mattresses, you can pay as much as you would like for one!!

Personally I can sleep soundly on a matting of pine cones, I don't need a fancy mattress.
 
tbf even at my ripe old age i've never had to buy a duvet :cool: my mum got us one years back (king size so all the covers cost extra :mad:) it's a cheapish feathery thing if that helps at all, has lasted us a good 15 years :) i work on having half-decent sheets and i'm rather a fan of blankets so the duvet gets stashed away in the summer and we have sheets/blankets/quilts then :)
 
that seems like a lot of money for a duvet. :confused: I doubt quality gets much better as the price increase tbh.
Why not just get a cheaper one you like the looks of and use more blankets during the winter? I have some thin fleece blankets that probably cost $15 but are the warmest ever. I layer them under my duvet depending on how cold it is.

it's a gift... it was that or curtains. To be fair, I've slept in some of the in-laws' houses and those fancy duvets are lovely...
 
The money is related to the stuffing. Duck down is the lightest and warmest filling possible. Feathers are cheaper but they are less warm and come out through the holes between the fabric eventually. Also it's about how easily the filler travels between the squares.

My old duvet (which I've just relegated to the spare bed) cost £80 but it did me for 15 years of supreme comfort. My new one cost me a similar amount and is made of the same filling. So prices haven't gone up at all :)

I know they can be very nice, too :)
I just got a whole set that I'm in love with at TJ maxx (US version of TK Maxx) for $90 complete with "accent pillows" and it has big emroidered flowers on it :cool:
 
if it helps at all i just happily spent £70 on a set of sheets that i got period blood all over on the first night :facepalm: :D
