The worldwide craze for 'love locks' - New York puts its foot down

Lovers want to make a permanent and visible statement of their love, and that's nice.

But a lock is quite a dodgy metaphor to use in matters of love.

A nice alternative might be the old 'deal post' arrangement where people, to record an agreement, would hammer a nail into a marketplace post to fix their contract.

This tradition is found all over the world, east and west, and the Pitt rivers Museum has a couple of South Seas deal posts. If lovers used these, it would at least be permanent and also a wee bit freudian...

(Incidentally, the expression 'clinch a deal' comes from this tradition because a clinch is an old name for a nail..)

Funnily I saw this yesterday at Parc Guell, Barcelona:

Some have used plastic bags here instead, weird! I expect people saw it, didn't have a lock so used anything that came to hand.

Maybe the plastic bags (on my pic) signify suffocation in a relationship...

The implied cultural normalisation of the concept that every time you are out with someone it is a 'date' is weird. Creeping Americanisation thread that way ------>

I only went on a 'date' once, and it was with my stalker. I thought an evening with me in a formal setting would convince her I wasn't worth stalking, and I was right :)

Probably an American meme...... 'Cute' 'date'- I think you are safe to have British platonic excursions with friends......carrying knives

I always carry a swiss army knife whenever I go to the countryside or camping...Also pocket knives used to be very popular and not for reasons of violence. They were much more accepted than now.

well if you get a stop search, and you will as a young man at some point, carrying any sort of blade over a certain length is illegal. Think they brought in mandatory sentencing for carrying now as well. So you get out of the habit, or rather, never get into it unless your a keen outdoorsy\fishing person

Do you have to go unlock yours if it all goes tits up?

Maybe then it could be used as a murder weapon.

I don't think carving living trees is a good idea, nor damaging old bridges ......... but if couples want to keep up this padlock fad, then perhaps some suitable fences could be built.

American bridges are falling down across the country. If they can spray some super-glue on those lock-clusters, I think that might firm up our rusty bridges.
