what is the point of spending everything on defence if you end up defending a toxick wasteland caused by your evisceration of environmental protection?

If you're ever in the US make sure to take a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It's where a lot of the super-wealthy oil barons have homes. They have a major world economic conference there. People like Dick Cheney make it home. It's one of the most pristine and beautiful places on the planet, with rules to keep it so. No pollution, and more importantly, no poor people. They don't (think they) live on the same planet as the rest of us.

And thats the not too distant future, drones taking out tanks, its the future and we are still going to build two swanky carriers and replace trident??
Somebody needs to have a word:D
Wait until the UK in full post-Brexit grovel to the US gets to forward purchase the wonderful new 4-G Trump-Fighter off his nibs instead of the F-35. You are going to love it as bigly as Trump-HS efficiencies buggering up your hip replacement.

By porking out on defence spend you starve the beast of the Federal government until it can be drowned in the bath of course. While handing out what is essentially political patronage that gives you leverage over Congress. It's an old trick of Reagan's. Trump is often just Ronnie with a thick layer of tasty vulgarity added.

The GOP have been blocking any sensible reform of the hugely profitable and murderous US healthcare bureaucracy for decades why change now?

Trump did say, with his usual logical inconsistency, that ACA collapsing would be nice politically but it probably doesn't work with the voters. He seems quite upset that for procedural reasons they have to sort out something on healthcare before he can pass his easy peasy tax reforms. As they need to know how much his promised wonderful future of universal Trumpcare would cost. Trump clearly has no idea of the mechanics of it. That's he seems to think is Congresses problem. It's that huge upwardly redistributive carrot of lower taxes that drew a lot of well off voters to stomach Trump. Poor folks healthcare being the way of their promised bung will just make them madder than Hell about it. They'd have dismantled Medicaid and Medicare as well if it knock a point of estate taxes. A lot are convinced that they are some version of The Elect poor people are justly hated by God. The dusky "Moochers" just a little bit more.

The argument from the GOP is that people who have complicated medical conditions will be in their own insurance bracket, thereby reducing the cost of Insurance for everyone.

This is literally the opposite of the fundamental principal of insurance.

if i visit it will be like that town rambo goes to in first blood, only i'll just slink off after being thrown out, not having his special forces skills :(

Side by side tally here of each instance since Election Day in which the president’s tweets seem to be repeating something he's just seen on tv.
It's almost possible to feel sorry for him, an old man glued to cable tv, regurgitating whatever he's just seen on the screen.
Trump tweets and the TV news stories behind them - CNNMoney

Posted this some place else, and it's been called fake news as the time on the tweet on the 9th Feb is out....

I think this might be what Sarah Palin meant by "death panels."

We drove through there once. Never been in a place like that before. It was vaguely reminiscent of parts of Monterrey, and Carmel, California. If ever in Monterrey, take the Seventeen Mile Drive [they charge you to do it]. The drive goes down part of the coast where Pebble Beach is located, along with the estates of the ultra wealthy.

There's nothing remotely similar here, although some of the ultra rich have homes in nice areas. The Okanagan is very nice - an arid region of wineries. There is an estate on a mountain above one of the towns, owned apparently by Gates, or another of the Silicon Valley billionaires. Years ago a forest fire went through the area and destroyed all the homes - except the estate. It had a parade of helicopters dropping a constant stream of water over it, saving it from the fire.

I think she more meant bodies like NICE deciding which drugs are worth the NHS buying and therefore sometimes who gets to live or die in the UK. Market forces killing folks was just fine like shooting Caribou from a chopper.

I've gone to their art festival a couple of times. Went to an art auction that blew my mind. There was a lady I started talking to that was the wife of an oil man. I ended up sitting next to her at the auction. She bought a quarter million dollar painting in less than 30 seconds of bidding. She must have seen the look on my face because she leaned over and said "I leave the big purchases to my husband." And she was right, it wasn't even close to the most expensive that they sold. I saw a Remington go for $5 mil. I was afraid to raise my hand to take the free wine for fear it would be confused for a bid.

You're lucky you even got in the front door.

Another one of those places is Livingston, Montana. Nice looking little town: not so pretentious as the others; but it's where the billionaires have their ranches.:)

There was a $45 fee to get in the door. I paid it because I figured it would be the experience of a lifetime... and it was. But, yeah, I kept expecting someone to come along and throw me out.

There's several of those towns in Montana. Big Fork and Whitefish come to mind.

Trump talk about a 10% tax on import is seen as ridiculous or dangerous, but the GOP plan for applying a 20% tax on imports is treated as a serious idea

Maybe compulsive lying runs in the family:

On Monday, a day before Trump International Hotel and Tower official opens in Vancouver with the President's sons Donald Jr. and Eric Trump attending, the company issued an outright falsehood on Twitter.

"Tomorrow marks the official grand opening of @TrumpVancouver," the 6:25 a.m. tweet stated. "The 69-story tower will be the first property to open in the city in over 6 yrs."

'Alt-facts'? Trump firm says tower 'first property to open' in Vancouver in 6 years | Metro Vancouver

The 'six years' bit, is out and out bullshit.

6 people have been invited to have the honour of sitting next to Melania Trump at some upcoming event: 3 of the chosen are people who have had a husband or a son killed by 'illegal immigrants'.

Wasn't Berta Caceres murdered in March 2016. What is the connection to Trump?

That Trump isn't the fount of all evil, the Democrats are just as murderous and ruthless as their Republican counterparts. By all means oppose Trump but opposing him should never be used as a means to gloss over and/or covering up the shit the Democrats get up to.

This is exposure therapy. Take someone whose life experiences have made them unduly frightened of people who have resided in the US illegally and sit them next to one for a bit. Say what you like about Trump, but it's an enlightened use of the First Lady.

He's the fount of evil on this thread.
You want to kick the Dems, absolutely fine? Start a relevant thread.

Honestly who knew. If only somebody warned us.

I'm really fucking sick of his lying face. His sons turned up to open Trump tower in Vancouver today (small protest and surprise, surprise it's 6 stories smaller than they said it was...that fellow has a tiny penis).
