*The Real Ale Thread

Was drinking a Brains Rev. James in Cardiff last Sunday - that was pretty dark, don't normally go for the darks (porter, stout etc.) but it was quite nice.

Cask recommended too.

Reverend James is a nice brew and no mistake.

I'm a big fan of mild - particular fave is Brain's Dark - or to give its correct pronunciation 'daaerrk'. :) . They used to keep a great pint of it in the Albert? next to the brewery in Cardiff - sorry, Caaerrdiff.

Oh and Felin Foel too - or Feelin' Foul as its known in Merthyr :D

Oh yes - I like me mild!

McEwan's 80/- is the finest ale known to man!

UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!!

Belhaven Best, Caledonian 80/- and Deuchars IPA are all far better IMO. I did have a bottle of McEwan's (I think it was McEwans anyways) 90/- and a 100/-. Wasn't really all that keen on either of them tbh.

Any 80/- beer is usually good IME, but there's something about the taste of the MacEwan's one. A really good pint of it is just exquisite.

IME it gets better the further north you get. Furthest south I've seen it is at a pub I frequent in Hull, where it's delicious but not quite as good as it is in Scotland.

My favourites are Adnams Broadside, Taylors Landlord,Deuchars IPA and anything from smaller Scottish Brewers such as Atlas,Sulwath,Kelburne, Houston or Black Isle. The Porter House do a nice Hemp Beer and a nice Wheat Beer although they are Keg albeit unpaseurised its worth pointing out that Beer doesn't have to be cask or bottle conditioned to be tasty. I'm going up to Glasgow next week so I'm hoping to sample some of the abovementioned delights.

Adnams used to do a really nice beer called Extra, but the brewery decided to stop producing it against the wishes of their customers iirc.

Cwrw Haf ( a plug here for the Welsh Thomas Watkins)

Not tried - but one for the next trip to Wales ..(see Welsh forum)

Mind you - cant beat a good pint of Youngs ...

anyone know anything about the beer club of great britain? Have just joined. I think it will be a good thing.

Great day out today, walk around the Yorkshire Moors then a few beers in The New Inn at Cropton. Started with 1 pint of Two Pints then 1 of Yorkshire Moors Bitter and completed with a superb malty Monkmans Slaughter at 6.0%. A day of heaven!

Up The Tigers

Three beers tonight

a couple of Mallard's Quacker Jack 4% - a favourite, and more excellent than I can describe :)
Mordue's Workie Ticket 4.7% (?) - from the the North East. OK, perhaps it doesn't travel well?
Nottingham Brewery's Supreme 5.2% - hic :)

I'm on Bosley Cloud tonight - we have a small brewery called Storm Brewing about 5 minutes' walk away and I'm finally managing to get hold of their beer. :) It's kind of chocolately or vanillary - nice!

Right. X-Mas coming up and I need some help with ideas.

My Dad has just got into ale. Well Indian Pale Ale to be precise. Now he lies either malty or hoppy ones not entirely sure which but which ever one of those to makes sense.

has anyone got any recomendations? Greene King is already on my list. Can ayone think of any others?

Cheers :)

morrison's in peckham seems to have quite a good selection of real ales. althoguh i can't think of any to recommend at the moment

oh, oyster stout. dunno what brewery it's from. but it's a stout not an ale.

so ignore me.

thread bumper

you can get some for my dad while you're at it (ale i mean) - still can't think of a more imaginative present for him

Greene King IPA is okay but it's nothing to write home about. I'm sure St Peters do a rather nice one.
