*The Real Ale Thread

Wow! Only just discovered this thread - keep it going! When someone has the decency / bravery to ask me out for a pint, I'll contribute. :(

Weatherspoons pubs! it's true, they sell so much beer it always fresh and well kept, sod the lack of atmospehere, just get pissed... :)
not true i'm afraid... the reason wetherspoon's beer is so cheap is cause they buy it dead cheap just before it goes out of date, and rely on their high turn over to get it sold before it goes off.

notice how their guest beers are always dead strong? that's because they keep longer - fair enough if you want to get shitfaced, but you end up fucked for choice if you want a session beer @ around 3-4%...

my fave beer right now is the thwaites best bitter - when it's well kept, tis fucking incomparable.

Actually no, haven't noticed that. Seen eveything from 3.2% milds through to stronger 5% ales. Compared to most pubs offering cask ales, Wetherspoons is pretty good IMO. At the one near to me the guest beers finish every few days anyway.

Castle Rock brewery in Nottingham do a beer called Harvest Pale. Light, VERY hoppy, about 3.8% Just about perfect for drinking outside in beer gardens on sunny afternoons (if we get any more of them this year). Its been winning competitions lately and is well worth tracking down.

Had one bottle, only the once, and it was off, which put me off forever I'm afraid......

:(

I'm not generally a fan of the strong ones -- I'll drink Bishop's Finger and enjoy it, but not as much as others -- but I'd like to try it anyway.

'D love a bottle of Whitstable Bay now, or Bluebird.

I like strong beer with a meal, maybe a doorstep of good bread with decent cheese, or pie and mash, something with bottom, if you know what I mean....just a pint. Sets you up nicely.

Currently in a land of lager and hot dogs, thanks for that :( :D

I see where you're coming from on the strong beer/food thing come to think of it, they do work well.

Btw, Mrs M -- Is this thread worth stickying, or is it a twitching corpse already?

currently enjoying a bottle of Trappistes Rochefort, a whopping 9.2% Alc Vol, bought when i was in antwerp last weekend...., it's almost stouty in flavour, very rich.... :)

had 2 pints of Titanic last night, can't remember the Brewery. not bad but not spectacular either.

Had a poor pint of summer ale, forget the brewer  in a usually very good fullers pub last night

My local had that on a few weeks ago when me and longdog were having a session in there. Can't say I was very impressed with it either.

Had some Archer's something or other the other night. Good brewery. Never had anything from there that wasn't good to excellent.

feel i need to add they don't make the peachy drink popular with underage girls

What CAMRA says here :)

aha:

A definition of Real Ale

Real ale is beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.

Real ale is also known as 'cask-conditioned beer', 'real cask ale', 'real beer' and 'naturally conditioned beer'.

The term 'real ale' and the above definition were coined by CAMRA.

Real Ale in a Bottle

Real ale comes in bottles too!. It is beer which continues to ferment, mature and condition within the bottle. It contains a visible amount of viable yeast cells together with sufficient fermentable sugars for this to take place.

ta :)

I've just had one of the nicest beers I've ever had.

Badger's Golden Glory.

It smells and tastes very fruity - which isn't surprising 'cos on the bottle it talked about having a peach and melon sort of taste - which sounds a bit icky but is actually delicious. Not too strong either.

I'm not pissed or anything ( :D ) but I feel like I've had a unique beer-drinking experience.

<goes abck for another bottle>

:) :)

<snip> I do love Tim Taylor's Landlord too - it's gorgeous.
mmmm real ale!!!!
RAH!
:D
I second that choice. I used to drink in a free house called the "John Bull" in York, where Landlord was the beer of choice. Alas that pub was long ago closed down. Ram Tam, Taylors mild is also nice with a pickled egg.

I've just discovered that Landlord is now available in supermarkets though :)

Thinking back, another great favourite of mine from those days was Worthington White Shield. Now discontinued although someone else has the rights to make it these days. http://www.worthingtons-whiteshield.com/

If you're into home brewing, you could do worse than collect the yeasty scum from the bottoms of the bottles to use as a starter for brewing.

(one way to definitely do worse is to drink the said yeasty scum ... )
