IMO there's nowt wrong with crisps, pickled eggs and all the rest of it, but dropping anything in your pint is sacrilege. Longdog dropped a pickled egg in his dark mild last time we were out on the beer in Hull. He claimed it made a nice tasty meal when you got to the end. Fucking waste of a good pint, if you ask me. :D

Being sent to grimsby's too much of a punishment even for an offence like that.

Deprivation of all beer for about three decades would be fairer.

:D

I've just had one of the nicest beers I've ever had.

Badger's Golden Glory.

It smells and tastes very fruity - which isn't surprising 'cos on the bottle it talked about having a peach and melon sort of taste - which sounds a bit icky but is actually delicious. Not too strong either.

I'm not pissed or anything ( :D ) but I feel like I've had a unique beer-drinking experience.

<goes abck for another bottle>

:) :)

i was going to post about this beer, it is fecking lovely, the peachy aroma and flavour really works, really refreshing pint...

(might have one now :) )

I used to drink in a free house called the "John Bull" in York, where Landlord was the beer of choice. Alas that pub was long ago closed down.

I miss that pub, it was one of the best pubs ever! Lovely original 1930's interior, good beer, staggering distance back to my parents' - what more could I want in a pub? It was demolished about ten years ago after a big campaign to keep it open, & the site is now a garage forecourt. You cannot tell there was ever a pub there. :(

My favourite beer at the moment is Meantime Brewery's strawberry beer - the coffee beer is also nice, but I'm not keen on the chocolate one.

Does anyone here recally something from Big Lamp brewery in Newcastle called "Old Genie"? I forget what ABV it was, in fact I seem to forget almost everything about the time I tried it, except falling sideways through a hedge and into a stream or pond of some kind, while (apparently) giving a woman wearing elaborate period dress (there was a theatrical event involved) an obscene variant of a piggy-back - I woke up next morning in a house I didn't recognise at all, covered in bruises and duckweed, then sneaked off before anyone got up - The other guy who had been drinking it slept in a flowerbed someplace and the woman with the wet dress had to have her stomach pumped, although whether that was from Old Genie or the pond I never quite established. I didn't try it again, so I'm not sure if it tasted nice or not ...

Do you recall "Kung-Fu" Kevin who worked behind the bar sometimes, or Morph, the guy who managed it for Neville for a bit just before it closed? (Morph was panning for gold in south america last time I heard from him.)

No, only remember Neville!

Fair enough. I agree, it was the best pub ever. I certainly haven't had as much fun in any other :)

Must be about 15 years since it shut too?

Yes - it could well be as long as 15 years ago. I still feel annoyed about it every time I go past that bloody garage forecourt! It was a pretty big campaign to save it, such a shame it didn't succeed.

Ok, it's the real ale festival at uni from tonight til friday night. Apparently there's over 100 different beers/ciders/wines. The list of them is over here: http://realale.warwickcompsoc.co.uk/festival2005/2005list.html

Anyone got any specific recommendations to try out?

Could try;
Archers Golden Orchid (Swindon)
Exmoor Gold (Wiveliscombe)
Jennings Snecklifter (Somewhere oop North)
JW Lees Moonraker (Manchester)
Orkney Dark Island

For a start.

But I'd definitely leave room for

Broadoak Kingston Black Cider.
As Kingston is an Apple growing village north of Taunton, I'm pretty sure this is Taunton Cider. Anything made with Kingston Black cider apples is pharmacologically fascinating. The variety is known locally as 'Ole Wobbly Legs'.

Dont believe no one seems to have mentioned The Laurel Inn in Robin Hood's Bay the perfect pub it's only standing because it's leaning on the building next to it :D Many an OP fuelled night there

Recommended by nino

St Peter's Suffolk Gold (difficult to get on draught)
Timothy Taylor Landlord
Harviestoun's Bitter & Twisted (yum)
Arran Blonde
Fullers London Porter
Fullers Honeydew

I'm not allowed to drink too much tonight so I'll probably be on the half pints (too much work  )

Half pints are a good idea at beer festies anyway. You get to try more types of beer.

Many of them are southern beers which I don't know. I can recommend Timothy taylor's Landlord tho, that's a local brew up here. Also I'd say go and try some milds and porters - beers from the past that have been forgotten in the mainstream but which can be wonderful. Or, just try lots of different types - a dark one, a malty one, a hoppy one - and see what sort of thing you like best

Time for a resurrection...

So what's your favourite bottled beer tipple at the mo'?

I like the Duchy Ale from the estates of old Charlie boy.

Am also partial to the Badger Champion and, of course, Old Speckled Hen.

The Morland Hen's Tooth is nice but a bit strong tasting, and what have they done with the Waggle Dance bottle! (don't like it).

What else...

The Peach flavoured Golden Glory's a bit strange but quite refreshing.

Back to the pumps: if someone were to present me with a pint right now, it'd have to be the classic Butcombe :)

I was in the Shooting Star on Middlesex street, near Liverpool st station - and they keep a nice drop of Fullers in there - the 'London Porter' is really good.

Sometimes I wonder why all the best beers in the world (Westvleteren 12 for example) are incredibly hard to get hold of.

And then I drink some Fuller's ESB. Widely available and yet still incredibly good. Drinking it all evening though is a recipe for unconciousness though.

<snip>

I've supplemented my bottled beer intake with the odd drop of cider, which seems sort of weird cos I've never really been into the stuff before. But, for the odd tipple of an evening a bottle of quality fermented apple juice can be pretty nice.

Beer-wise, latest faves are Sierra Nevada pale ale and Young's London Ale. Both of these are bottle conditioned and unlike many that proclaim this, they really are nice n lively

I'd like to add Fullers Discovery to the list. There may well be a few more at the end of this week. I expect to be drinking a few at the Great British Beer Festival. ;)

tbh, me too of late.

Likewise, have never liked cider since at school but it's quite refreshing in the summer.

Frome Something is the cider of my choice :)

I'm a big fan of mild - particular fave is Brain's Dark - or to give its correct pronunciation 'daaerrk'. :) . They used to keep a great pint of it in the Albert? next to the brewery in Cardiff - sorry, Caaerrdiff.

Oh and Felin Foel too - or Feelin' Foul as its known in Merthyr :D
