The price of "vintage" clothing

If you really want to check out eyewatering prices, you should look into the vintage denim world - you can easily pay thousands of pounds for pair of 50s or 60s 501s in decent condition...

I also am rubbernecking at your auctions now and it's interesting what you say about the internal construction of the dress. The 50s dress I bought also has this thing where some of the seams are handsewn and some are machined, with no obvious reason. No facings or hems at all, everything finished with self bias binding, and the fabric edges are pinked because presumably they had no zigzag stitch back in the day.
Hey, was that you with the question? I'm guessing it was, thanks :)

I hate selling things on ebay. I feel a bit embarrassed now that I know people who know me are watching  :)

FWIW anybody sneering at you for selling things on ebay is either not worth knowing or needs to get a life.

I'm not embarrassed by selling things on ebay, I've done it for years. I'm embarrassed about how crap I am at it. One of my feedbacks from a buyer says something like, "nice coat, pity about the photos"

Have you got a lamp fitted with a daylight bulb? Decent lighting can go a long way to helping people work out what they might be buying.

40s and 50s fashion is back in fashion, so they can charge outrageously for it as the demand's there.

Wish I'd raided my nan's wardrobe when she'd died. I'd have made a fortune now!

and theres even less of it around now - going on for 60, 70 years old, it's scarce now. I remember there being loads of it in the chazzas when I was a fashion student in the 80's, but we bought most of it and trashed it, back then. I get very few 'finds' in charity shops nowadays, I tend to have more luck collecting costume jewellery, but for that I visit antique markets.

There used to be a shop (well 3 of them I think) called Flip in London that sold all vintage gear, but that was in the early 80s I was going. Have no idea if they still exist. Not heard of them for decades

Yep, used to go there and American Retro or classics, was it on the Kings Road?

Yeah, one was on Kings Road, and I'm struggling to remember where the other two were

Seems there's a Flip shop in Newcastle. Don't know whether it's connected with the three that used to be in London but it was established in 1978 and they sell stuff on ebay. Can't see anything in the way of womenswear though. I never actually bought anything from them. I used to just go in there and look at stuff. Never had money to buy anything :D

In kensington market or was that Johnsons, remember them, Ive still got a 1980's ID magazine annual which tells you where to shop, its very entertaining

Yes, definitely Kensington (High St Kensington). I have a strange feeling the other one may have been in or around the City :hmm:

Was probably Soho or West End area though

Oh, it wasn't Kensington

Just found this

The arrival of Flip (American vintage clothing) on the London shopping scene at the end of the 70s coincided nicely with the Rockabilly revival - cheap chic at it's best. There were branches in three key locations; Covent Garden, King's Road and Shoreditch. The latter was a far cry from the uber cool district it is today, but interestingly held the best stock. It was mostly frequented by the cognoscenti hankering after a bygone era and students from the London College of Fashion next door. The stock was considered too esoteric for the other two branches which catered for a more mainstream clientele.

Well my City suggestion was near enough to Shoreditch!

Actually, I've just remembered I did buy a lined cardigan in one of them once... then shrunk it in the wash

I got my 50s wedding dress (well it was a wedding dress for me, guess it was originally a prom dress) off eBay for £70 3 years ago. I've seen similar dresses from the same professional seller go for at least 3 times that recently

Me and my partner went to what is (or was, not sure if it's till there!) now called Phlip about a year ago. It was in the same place, but eye-wateringly expensive - £45 for a t-shirt.

The original Flip used to be cheap as chips - used to buy a lot of stuff there. I remember buying some 50s dresses this great retro shop in York called Priestley's - they were about £3 each, but that was a fair while ago!

I save money on vintage clothing now by not buying it on the premise that I would look like something from Blue Remembered Hills.

You could flog it! Or are you keeping it? :D

Sadly it got rather fucked at the wedding! Drunken tall men lifting up very short bride equals dress torn at the seams and through the netting overlay. I've looked into getting it mended but would cost more than the original dress and Menders think it wont be successful.

I did get a second wear recently at a friends fucking hideous fancy dress 40th, I was princess peach to mr shakes mario. It was in a nightclub in Hereford and every time I went to the loo pissed girls thought I'd just got married.

I have no idea who Princess Peach or Mario are but the first para made me laugh :D

No, of course not :D When I sell things in the flesh as it were, I do presentation really well. I was a department store fashion window dresser for years. It's just with ebay, it's all too much faff and because I'm usually anonymous I don't care enough to make an effort :)

I should sell some of my stuff really. I've got an 80s Gianni Versace dress which I never wear (not sure if it even fits!) and a couple of sixties numbers which definitely don't fit. I wish I had more occasion to wear some stuff. I have an absolutely beautiful forties evening dress for example.
