Clothes for winter - what to wear

I get lots of stuff in New Look (I’m also limited in that I have to buy short people clothes) - jeans, jumpers, ankle boots and a long hooded parka get me through winter.
Another shortie here. Buying trousers is such a pain.

Great tips on here. I did actually have winter clothes as it does get cold in Istanbul, but had to get rid of pretty much everything to move back. Hopefully my lovely furry winter boots will be coming over soon.

Tu (Sainsburys) has a limited amount of reasonably priced petite stuff. I also find Next good for length but very generous in their sizing.

I don't suppose I'll be going out much this winter anyway, come to think of it. The only job prospects I have are online, for now. So maybe just some warm pyjamas.
best place for cosy pjs is imo Primark, if you're on a limited budget it might be worth going to a couple of charity shops
Lidl/Aldi do good base layer thermal stuff every so often, sign up for emails so you don;t miss them though :)

How far north and what size are you? I'm suspecting not as far north as Scotland? Could have given you clothes for every damn season. I'm trying to clear years of hoarding

Given that you will probably only be able to socialise outside in the next week or two then a warm coat is a must. Charity shops are open round my way.

May I also suggest some good waterproof shoes/boots? I hate cold wet feet so I make this a priority. Although if you're into walking I suppose you already have some.

The weather's getting cooler, so it's time for me to buy some winter clothes (I moved back to the UK in June, and only have thin trousers, t-shirts, trainers and a few jumpers.) I haven't been in the UK for a winter for a very long time. How cold will it get? (I'm up north...) Let's say I want to spend under £100, including a winter coat - where should I go shopping? Of course it's now not allowed to try clothes on - ok for tops but terrible for trousers/dresses. I hate clothes shopping :(
I recommend going to m&S for long sleeved thermal underwear - so you can continue to wear your thinner clothes.

Then go to your local charity shops, you should be able to buy several coats/ jackets. At least if something really doesn't fit you won't have spent too much.

friendofdorothy - have a butcher's on fleabay - they are deliciously warm, and a much closer, more comfortable fit than normal wellies.

Mine are from a company called Dirtboot - I wear them all day, both in the fields and mooching through town.

Actually life-changing.

Mrs D has just been asking what to take with her to Scotland where she’s having to do some business next week. It’s cooler here now summer is ending, 29 with some cloud. Edinburgh is not going to be so warm!

Her problem is that she doesn’t want to carry boots or big coats with her, nor does she want to buy anything.

Suggestions for light weight kit?

miss direct apologies for hijacking your thread but I thought there might be mutually beneficial ideas.

FYI Edinburgh right now is 5 degrees and is likely to reach the dizzy heights of 11 at the hottest today.

My recommendation would be a fleece and a light/thin waterproof. That way if it is wet you have the right clothes and if it is cold you also have the fall back of a fleece under the waterproof.

I have some similar made by muckboot, incredible for dog walking, hikes, fishing. Easier to drive in than standard wellies too. Only need normal thin socks as well, plenty warm enough.

I've got a black thin waterproof (very lightweight) men's size medium miss direct if that's any good I'll stick it in the post to you if you want, I never use it any more.
Thanks Lynn. I've actually got a similar sort of jacket. Very kind of you though.

I've been into town today - Tesco has some good loungewear stuff - big fluffy jumpers and things. May well go back and get some warm PJs while the 25% off is still on. Got some warm jogging bottoms from New Look that I ordered online with a discount. Amazingly, they fit.

Lots of nice things in Debenhams but expensive. Big sale but all summery stuff, understandably.

No worries. Anyone else that see it and thinks it'd be useful for them give me a PM.

I want to say hit the charity shops somewhere a bit posh - I've had some absolute bargains - but I'm not sure if many have opened up...

TKMaxx is often worth a punt.

done that, it's mostly the same old shite but a lot more expensive.

tk maxx have all their jackets out atm.

I feel the cold, a lot.

Solution is simple; layers - lots of them. Thin but trapping air between them works best and doesn't bulk up too much.
Base layer can be "thermals" if you need the extra warmth (I do - and trespass do XS as a size).

Outside layer needs to be water and wind proof. Including decent gloves and hat.
Plus something to wrap around your neck and face to keep the breeze out.

E2A - craghoppers do some good lined work trousers (showerproof), and thinsulate's items are expensive, but good.

ebay can be really good for clothes as people are selling stuff that no longer fits. i wouldn't spend too much unless you're very confident it'll fit (cos familiar with the brand etc) as most people don't accept returns on that sort of thing.
