The Outdoorsy "Sofa".

I'm just back from a 3 day walking trip from Aviemore to Blair Atholl via the Larig Ghru and Glen Tilt.

This was my camping spot in the Larig Ghru. I've no idea what the temperature was that night, but it was fucking cold :D

I also spotted some ptarmigan!

I didn't get many photos of Glen Tilt as my camera had died by then:

I'm fucking knackered today

Looks like Cotswold Outdoor are in trouble - the parent company of CO and Snow and Rock have applied for a CVA.

Standard stuff: looking for rent reductions and closing the less profitable/loss-making stores.

I've wondered for a long time how they managed to survive...

Recommend me a self inflating mat please

My current much loved thermarest is 20 years old  it's served me well but I'm sure camping mat technology has moved on in the interim. What should I be looking at? I'd want a full length one, and more on the luxury than ultralight end of things.

Are you planning on carrying it or for car camping?

For car camping I stick to really thick vango ones or similar 5mm or 7.5mm. Much cheaper and dam site more comfy then my lightweight expensive thermarest neo air.

Yeah I've got one of those big blow up ones for car camping, and take a proper duvet and stuff. I'm looking at more of a replacement for hiking, but I like my comfort so there's some things I don't mind spending money on.

Those fat vangos are actually more comfy then air mattresses as they don't give in the night. Anyway. If you don't mind spending money then I'd probably stick with thermarest and decide your compromise. More weight and bulk will be more comfy, more lightweight and they can be tiny. My neo air is about the size of a can of coke!

Anyone got any ideas?

TNF Canyonlands from about 1999/2000, I like the tent - though it's by no means a perfect design - it weighs just over 1kg and it's small size prevents me from bringing all the normal crap or sitting around for days on end, so it's a good backpacking tent.

Can I salvage it?

Someone was telling me about a special tape the other day for kit repairs. Think it was tenacious tape...no direct experience though.

Last legs though maybe? I've got a Wild County just a few years newer and it's definitely letting a bit of water though now. Don't do that sort of camping enough these days to justify a new one at the moment...

UV damage? I had an old Wild Country that eventually went like that in one spot, and the rest wasn't very far behind. There are a few places that could patch that up with something, but maybe it's time to relegate it to being a kids garden tent (or a Viking burial)?

Yeah, I fear the plastic patch it needs lives in my wallet and has my bank's name on it...

Where the holes are means that rain pisses in to the sleeping area, I can cope with a healthy breeze coming in, but if I'm getting wet then I may as well not carry the thing.

Alpkit have got a new 1 man, 1kg tent on their website or a 2 man for 300 grams more. I like the idea of a Hilleberg, but I'm having an extreme emotional reaction to buying a tent for more than my first three cars combined...

The Ordos looked good when I saw it up in their store in Ambleside.

What did you think of it?

Big enough for two adults + gear? Vestibule any good?

I've got an Alpkit Kangri as my four season tent, I'm really happy with the design and build - particularly compared to Terra Nova - so i'm happy to go with Alpkit if the design is right...

I was looking very much with the perspective of comparison with my Zephyros 1.

It looked roomy for one, with a bigger vestibule and more freestanding. All things that I'd like to improve on from my current tent. Pack size and weight were in the same (broad) ballpark.

But as a 2 person? Hmmm. I think it'd be snug.

Ordos 2 (green) purchased from the good people at Alpkit.

What they say on the website is entirely true - turn up to their HQ for a chat, a brew, and a touch and feel of the gear.

I got the footprint as well - longevity issues for a start, but I want the option of ditching the inner.

The shiny is strong at Alpkit....
