A list of sports I have no interest in seeing at the Olympics

I stand by my statement that given a real choice, they wouldn’t
And I don't think anyone has disagreed with that.
I shouldn’t have posed a reason why the competitors wear the uniform
Specifically in terms of judging the players, no. That's what people took issue with.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone play it outside of 80's Teen Movies
I've def seen it in person on beaches in Greece, and almost certain I've seen it on (non-fiction) telly at various points.

The uniforms are uncomfortable, dysfunctional and lend no competitive edge.

You’re talking shit: All About Beach Volleyball Uniforms at the Olympics: Dress Code, Sizing and Why Some Athletes Prefer Bikinis

Why Some Athletes Prefer Bikinis

Many beach volleyball players say that bikinis are optimal for the sport. Two-pieces prevent sand from getting trapped in the uniform, therefore distracting from play. According to Kessy, this is the reason why she doesn’t wear a one-piece.

“It was restricting and limited my movements — imagine diving chest first and lodging more sand than you care to think down the front of your suit. You can’t keep it in there and it is not easy to get out. I found myself adjusting my one-piece all the time and while it was embarrassing, sure, it also took my focus off the match I was playing,”

any possible athletic benefit
Also, just for the avoidance of doubt: this wasn't suggesting the current uniforms are particularly advantageous, but simply alluding to the fact that kits for athletic, outdoor sports tend to be fairly light anyway (e.g shorts and sleeveless tops in indoor volleyball, tennis, shorts and short-sleeved shirts in football, etc).

You are the one operating under false assumption.
Peer pressure plays the bigger role. Basketball type uniforms would be a better choice than any swimwear

All fair points

I was wandering round Crystal Palace park, last year and saw it being played at the big leisure centre. They all looked pretty pro, too. Wonder if that's where it's based in the UK?

I feel the need, the need to discuss the politics of beach volleyball!

Can I ask we take Beach Volleyball attire chat to another thread? This was a good cathartic pisstake and moan of the aesthetically shite Olympic sports

All went a bit...

That said, Beach Volleyball has always been a 'thing' for as long as I can remember (nets have been up in European Beaches since forever)...And having given it some thought, what a great sport it is? Any beach can be converted into a group play area with absurdly simple rules, varying teams etc.

What a damn great sport! If it didn't exist, it would definitely need to be invented.

Indeed, the indoor Volleyball (from memory when we tried it a few times at school) is a whopping stuffy schlep by comparison, ISTR loads of formality around rotating, and only spiking a harder ball in a few possible ways. And you need 2 teams of 9 people.

Juuuust to fully loop us back with some more appropriate negativity and criticisms... Whilst Beach Volleyball does work, I gotta say the 3x3 basketball was incredibly dull. Maybe we agree its a game that evolved out of necessity (not having enough players, fit 2 games on 1 court) rather than preference, and, dare I say, had a bunch of cultural/asthetic stuff of street basketball that doesn't work in a national kit.

Liked, particularly for the last paragraph.

Indoor volleyball is great though. And you only need 6 on a team, not 9.
