The Monochrome Set are back!

I stumbled upon this thread, after searching around the internet for forum threads and posts about the Monochrome Set. I've been reading through a few of the posts, and it's been really interesting getting to read some of the posts from editor . Okay, so what brings me here? I had never really heard of the band until about 6 months ago, apart from maybe hearing the song 'Jet Set Junta' a couple of times in passing. It all started with a recommendation from a friend, they linked me to the song 'Ten Don'ts For Honeymooners' on YouTube, and I was just blown away. Now I've got 4 of the bands albums so far and got a few of the old singles on 7 inch and am going to be adding to the collection over the next few months. My favourite album is 'Eligible Bachelors', the perfection of the bands sound and features my three favourite tracks by the band 'I'll Scry Instead', 'Fun for all the Family' and "The Mating Game'.

I'm sure my knowledge of the band is tiny, but it strikes me they were the nearly men of post-punk/new wave. I heard in interviews that they weren't really focused on commercial success and just made the music they wanted to. But it also seems 'The Lost Weekend' was a real stab at commercial success. That's no criticism at all, I personally think it's such an underrated gem and really easy and accessible to listen to. Although, personally 'Wallflower' was a far better single than 'Jacob's Ladder'. I understand that there was a lot of problems with the album and issues with record labels and the album was ready to go pretty much a whole year before it was actually released. I can't help but think if things went smoothly and they had the backing at the time, things could have gone in a whole different direction. Also, the Bid solo single "Reach For Your Gun" is cracker, and I'm sure in the alternate timeline, where The Lost Weekend wasn't plagued with huge issues behind the scene, it would have ended up a top-40 single for the band.

As for the bands newer work, the bits of 'Spaces Everywhere', 'Cosmonaut' and 'Maisieworld' I have listened to so far are really solid and all really worth a listen. I was well pumped to see the band are performing in London in September touch wood, I'm going to go get my ticket now, and hope it works out. It would be fitting that The Monochrome Set are the first band I see post lockdowns, as they have basically been the sound of my last few months at home.

Anyway, this post is rather long (I tried to make it as short and concise as possible), feel free to criticize all I have said and point out all the information I have got wrong. I imagine touting the virtues of The Lost Weekend may be controversial? But come on, how can you not love 'Cargo' and 'Twitch'.
I was a fan of the band before I joined them (twice!) and like you, my favourite is 'Eligible Bachelors.' They're definitely not a band that have ever sought big time commercial success, although Jacob's Ladder nearly got them there - but from what I've gathered when it was picking up mainstream radio airplay you couldn't buy it in the shops because of a record company fuck up!

Since I rejoined, I had to really go on and on to get them to finally include it in their live set, despite it being the nearest thing they got to a hit!

Totally makes sense for Jacob's Ladder to get a run out live. Yeah, from what I've read there were plenty of fuck ups behind the scenes around The Lost Weekend, none of it really due to the band themselves.

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but while searching the depths of YouTube, I found this

It seems to have been posted up on YouTube in the really early days of the site (May 2006), the band performing Reach for Your Gun and Wallflower on some show called Eastern Eye? (I guess some regional programme) the video is terrible quality. The main reason for flagging it up is the interview at the end, the interviewer is just awful, but Bid is just hilarious in his responses. Can't work out if he's just bs-ing the whole time.

He came up with a great story for the last album

The Monochrome Set continue a vein of productivity (this their sixth album in seven years) with new album Fabula Mendax, which the PR declares is based on manuscripts written in the 15th Century by Armande de Pange, a companion of Jehanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc). However, a very brief (admittedly) trawl of the internet failed to turn up anything to verify the existence of such a manuscript (admittedly some of the results were in French which isn’t my first language, or indeed second, third, or fourth) and, knowing the Monochrome Set’s penchant for creativity and imaginative warping of reality, I will take this with a pinch of salt.

So some news. It's looking like the US tour is going be rescheduled again for May 2022.

I could have done the Reading gig, but that's the Something Else weekend. Boooo.
(I used to sign on at what is now South St Arts Centre!)

Been expanding my Monochrome Set collection today, purchased Dante's Casino & Trinity Road on CD. I'm more excited to hear Dante's Casino in full as I have already heard a couple of tracks from the album (House of God & Walking With The Beast) and demos of few of the tracks (Bella Morte, Up & White Lightning). Not sure what to expect from Trinity Road, but I'm pretty sure I heard I Love Lambeth from a live set on YouTube.

Just a follow up to my above message from back in March.... Dante's Casino is an amazing album, a real forgotten gem that deserves so much more attention.

Also, I was unaware of The Raj Quartet (which I assume is BID with his voice sped up), I had no idea this version of Whoops! What a Palaver existed. So if you haven't heard it before, here you go....

5/4 is a bugger to play live!

Just over a month to go until the London gig! I'm really excited to get the chance to see The Monochrome Set live. Will be going on my own sadly, but if anyone going did want to meet for a pre show pint or anything, then send a DM or something.

I now own every Monochrome Set album!.

My favourite albums from each of the three periods (although they're pretty much all great to good) are:
Eligible Bachelors
Dante's Casino
Platinum Coils / Maisieworld

Chuffed to say that I play on half of those!

Less than a week until my first gig since lockdown. Proper excited for Saturday, first gig since lockdown. Fingers crossed it's going ahead. Coming as a relatively new fan... i hope we hear a few cuts from recent times. Oh, and lets not forget Wallflower.... it should have been a hit ;). I'm sure we will probably never meet, but thanks for playing a part in recent times. TMS have helped me a lot, I cared for my dad through his dementia, he sadly died last month.... seriously your music has helped so much in recent times as a distraction.

Awesome gig. Had a brilliant time. I was right at the front (red t-shirt, apologies if my singing along annoyed anyone near me). Some seriously good tracks played and so tight. It was the best time I've had over the last couple months. Thank you The Monochrome Set.

I saw you! It was brilliant seeing you sing along to every song!

We had hoped to introduce a new song and play Jacob's Ladder as a last encore but time was against us. Thanks so much for supporting the band. It was amazing to be playing live again.

I'm a little embarrassed by my enthusiasm to be honest with you, but it's been a long couple of years, and dealing with the aftermath of my dad passing has been difficult. It really was a great night for me. I was really pleased by the mix of songs played, I would have enjoyed Jacob's Ladder... but seriously it didn't matter. Glad we got Jack on its 30th anniversary! Oh and even a cut from Dante's Casino in Walking With the Beast. Thank you! An acquaintance of mine should be supporting you in Lewes. So I'm currently planning an apperance there. Dabbling with the idea of meeting a mate of mine in Leicester later this year!

Edit: my biggest regret from the night was not saying hello! Had a couple of opportunities to do so, but didn't want to bother you or the band. Maybe another time. All the best.

Three years ago we played Barcelona. I think this must be the biggest crowd I've ever played to. Hearing my bass drum echoing back from the distant buildings made me nervous as fuck for the first few songs - just how loud will my mistakes be heard?! - but I soon realised I just need to enjoy the experience because it's unlikely to ever come around again.

It was a fun thing to do but I definitely prefer smaller shows where the crowd is more entwined with the event.

I think I will come to the Sound House show in Leicester....I'm up here that weekend...

The Monochrome Set perform Love @ Leicester Polytech 1985

Seeing as the Monochrome Set are performing in Leicester at the weekend.

Here's a rare performance of the song Love performed live back in 1985.

Love would end up as one of the b-sides on the 12 inch version of the BID solo single, Reach For Your Gun (which is pretty much a Monochrome Set release in all but name) and a demo version of the track features on the rarities compilation Volume, Contrast, Brilliance Volume 2.

Happy listening.

Monochrome Set have a new song up on YouTube, 'Hello, Save Me'. Sounds a lot like it could have fitted perfectly on Cosmonaut.

I see from Bandcamp, the new album 'Allhollowtide' is released on the 11th March! Exciting... the day before the Lewes show.

editor : Do you know if we'll be able to purchase physical copies at the live show? I will be spending the 11th streaming :D

Edit: scrap that, I've just preordered the cd and blue vinyl... may as well treat myself :p

I hope to be at Hebden Bridge in May. I was supposed to be going with an old friend but sadly found out he died the week before Christmas.
I’ll have to see how things go.
