The Last of Us

I saw the first episode but haven’t seen any more yet. I still don’t get what makes it so good though? What makes this better than the first couple episodes of Walking Dead, which everyone raved about at the time? What makes it not just another rehash of the same old scenario? The fact it’s caused by a mutant global warming fungus or whatever doesn’t really add anything imo.

I was sucked into watching about seven seasons more of the Walking Dead than I should have done, I’ll never get those hours of my life back. If I’m going to follow this show I need to be sure in my own mind why.

You may be right but i've never watched the walking dead so i can't compare it to this. Never played the LOU game either. Enjoyed both episodes so far. If it gets shit later i'll stop watching.

Well, one very crucial difference apparent already is that this show gets the pace spot on; the complete opposite of The Snoozing Dead.

This week’s episode didn’t go the way I was expecting, but the series is all the better for it. Great storytelling, and I can’t wait for the next instalment. How to fucking make a TV series
:)

It was really excellent. Hard to see how any other episode of this series could top this.

HBO max is just unrivalled in terms of producing TV shows. We’ve had White Lotus S2, House of Dragons, Last of Us and, up next, Succession S4. All in a row.

Brilliant casting decisions for Bill and Frank.

Ron Swanson basically playing himself (if he found love):

And loveable Murray Barlett:

Always playing everyone's favourite character and then dying :(

yep the first 2 were ok with cool scenery/visuals but a bit "set up the story", episode 3 is getting into being actually good.

Lyanna Mormont on a quest with Oberyn Martell with added gay nesting?

Ooh I'd seen this mentioned in places but didn't realise it was about a pandemic caused by a cordyceps fungus  Cordyceps are awesome, one of my next tattoos is gonna be a giant ant with a fruiting body growing out of its head.

Yeah see post 61. I've also seen several pics of infected insects recently like this fly here...

Or this tarantula..

Yeah they affect a lot of species but they tend to be super specialised, so one fungus will affect a specific species of ant or whatever but not the very closely related species living a mile away. I read an estimate from a scientist who works with these and various other parasites that there's probably 1000+ different ophiocordyceps in the world and they're finding new ones all the time.

There's other even more specialist fungi (polycephalomyces iirc?) that grow as a hyperparasite of ophiocordyceps sp. They don't really seem to turn up anywhere else, but they grow around the immature fruiting bodies of ophiocordyceps and its dead host and effectively neuter the "zombie fungus", limiting the amount of viable spores it releases which actually probably helps it survive long-term because it's not wiping out too many of the insects it needs reproduce.

Based on the games, you can expect something a lot more character driven than The Walking Dead.

The games are actually one of the few with a really high quality of writing and dialogue. If you just watched the cut scenes back to back and then filled in the in between bits they would actually be better than most movies, one reason why this adaptation is particularly good.
I know exactly what that means. 😐

I’m never done talking about the cut scenes of video games with da yoot. Sick. 🤙

If you watch the opening 15 minutes of the game on Youtube, you can see how it is quite easily adapted to TV. The entire game keeps up a similar level of cinematicness throughout.

I’m sure it’s great. I’ll probably watch the TV show if it ever hits a platform I can access. But, and I mean this in friendship, I’m not watching a 15 minute YouTube video of a computer game.

I watched along with some of the game with my daughter years ago - along with Fallout: New Vegas and a couple of others, it's actually enjoyable to watch even if you're not playing. Beautiful interesting world-building, amazing music. So I did have reasonably high expectations for this show. But it's exceeded them absolutely. It's been brilliant right from the first scene. The casting is entirely realistic - for example, when they want a fungus expert, the person they call in is a woman in her 60s, much more likely to be THE expert than the 20-something hottie they usually cast. And her acting was heartbreaking and believable, same as everyone else's.

I've come close to tears a few times, but laughed a bit too. Daughter and I were both really disappointed that we have to wait for the next episode.
