The Generic Tennis Thread

Never seen that before with the line judges running up to the ump to report a player. It's a bit odd tbh. Makes them look like snitches, which is unfair on them as much as anything.

I know who Kyrgios reminds me of - Trump.

Petulant, childish, constant complaining, thinking everything is against him, snide to his opponents. Sad.

Nightmare opponent :D, but his tactics worked a dream. Not sure he’d get into the head of someone like Novak or Nadal though, we’ll probably find out too, think he’s going deep in this tournie.

I see Kyrgios is pissing and moaning again  Hope Garin can put him out, or failing that, that he learns to STFU.
It’s a fucker. He is a great player, when he can be arsed. I quite like most of his attitude: he’s a worker who does his job for pay, not love and who is anti the posh boy fake politeness. But it appears his I’ll-temper is not contained to the tennis court. And the ATP pretend that that matters less than wearing the wrong trainers. :(

Not my perspective. He has a go at everyone, including line judges who do it for nothing. Everyone except him is incompetent. He is the centre of the world, nobody else's feelings matter. And when he's called out for gamesmanship, his response is that others need to toughen up. He comes across as a big spoilt child. And I agree with what Tsitsipas said - Kyrgios acts like a bully at times. It's ugly to see.

His attitude does seem to have changed a bit, but in the past he has come across as someone who doesn't know how lucky he is.

Just watched Elena Rybakina take Simona Halep apart  Really impressive.
Yes, I watched the end of it. Some amazing shots.

Going to be hilarious if we have a Russian winner.

(while playing under the Kazakhstani flag, like many who do this Rybakina is ethnically Russian. The irony!)

Withdrawn :( probably will be a Kyrgios Djokovic final, hard to figure out which one to back 🙄
It is indeed hard, but going with Djokovic.

I normally detest narratives about people being 'hard-working' but Djokovic deserves it more, and apart from the anti-vax nonsense (which admittedly is hard to get past!) he seems like a decent guy, at least he's not an arrogant bully like Kyrgios.

People go on about Kyrgios's amazing shots and talent but Djokovic also has those, although he's not as flashy.

Terrible shame about Nadal, though.

ETA - I've just realised I'm totally discounting Norrie, which is perhaps unfair, but I can't see him getting past Djokovic. You never know though - we might have the men's final that absolutely no-one expected! :D

I'm used to this a little bit in cricket but this guy was born in south africa, grew up in NZ (and speaks like a Conchord as a result) but we're claiming him.. :D

Does nationality really even matter in this sport? Which makes the banning of the Russian players, most of whom learned their craft in the US and live there stupendously stupid as well

We haven't 'claimed' him, he's chosen to represent GB because both his parents are British. Pretty normal in virtually every sport going.

Yeh I guess my point is, why do they even bother putting flags up next to their names in tennis. I get it in cricket/football etc where the majority of the side are from the country they represent. It's a different ball game.

Olympic Games and Davis Cup, plus funding from national bodies.
