The end of cash?

Have you never ponder that, to eliminate cash is also to eradicate tax evasion, corruption, drugs trading, and many other wrong beaviours?
Of course I have. And indeed I myself now use mainly Apple Pay. What I was regretting is that there are millions of people for whom there are significant barriers to doing that.
Can I explain in a new thread why?
You may do as you please.

Particularly given that this thread has reignited since your OP, it seems that some posting on here could do well to read the original Ceeney report that you referred to:

There are already ways to deal with the illegal activities you mention that don't come at the expense of law-abiding folk who need cash for legit reasons. Collective punishment is immoral.

We do this anyway, but at the checkout. We load the conveyor built in the way we want to pack stuff and then take it off and load bags as required, chilled together, frozen together
fresh together etc. It is not difficult.

Of course not. But you know what's even easier? Loading it straight into the trolley.

Only works if there's another customer still in front of you, otherwise things start disappearing off the end of the conveyor belt before you have arranged all your items in the desired sequence.

Several wrong things with this idea:

* The extremely poor often operate in the gaps of legality to survive. Many poor people work "off the books" as a way to get work when they don't have any other options. Unless you are going to offer better solutions for them to survive, you should let them be.

* These things are already illegal and have existing ways to enforce them. If you want to go after tax evasion, close all of the perfectly legal loopholes the morbidly wealth use to pay no tax. The top-ten most wealthy people pay almost no tax, and they don't operate in cash. They operate in electronic debt as their currency.

* There are all kinds of workarounds in a non-cash system to do the same things. Prostitution services often operate openly, taking card payment. It just appears on the statement as something else. So, the workaround isn't that difficult. Even the Catholic church got into money laundering for drug dealers. When there's so much money involved, they will always have willing collaborators.

* It would crash the economy. In most economies about half the transactions going on are related to drugs or crime. Eliminating this will result in the lowering of the velocity of money (Velocity of Money: Definition, Formula, and Examples) and crash the economy.

It's just plain naive to think that eliminating cash will eliminate tax evasion, etc. A better question might be "should we try?"

Where do you get this from?

I read it in a book on economics some time ago. I'm working on finding it and so far it appears that number is inflated, it does amount to trillions of dollars:

Political corruption ($2.6 T):

Organized crime ($900 M):

Money Laundering:

Drug trafficing and tax evasion ($2.1 T):

A character on the Archers last night mentioned that she’d given her brother some money to go to the bar - they were in a pub - and he came back with her change: I thought the thread would be pleased to learn this
I have never listened to the archers but i kind of imagine that it's the sort of show where new fangled stuff like card payments would be unthinkable :hmm: :D

Can you summerise the plot so far in 20 words or less.
Farm trouble. Rural economy. Issues of same clumsely crow barred into dialogue.
The land owners vs tenant farmers, tensions.
Charming attempts to make elisit cider etc by work a day mostly honest country folk.
People roped into terrible am dram productions put on by a pretencious snob, but who is not all that terrible really.
Dodgy land deals. Cockney wrongun.
Everyone implausibly having affairs even though the gene pool must be quite restricted and no one ever just like fucks off to somewhere more realistic.
Goodie son vs his hapless brother.
Foli, cows, pigs etc.

You aint missing much.. I've not heard it for about 3 years TBH.
