The end of cash?

To use my ApplePay (similar to Google Wallet), it has to unlock via facial recognition. That makes it more secure than normal contactless. The exception is for tapping through public transport, which i have approved to use without unlocking first.

Wow, how does that work? Do you have to look into the camera before it will work?

I've seen people wave their phone in front of the Oyster readers on the bus, but presumably the reader doesn't know or care who's doing the waving, right?
So like a contact less card?

No, because the phone needs unlocking.

They're pretty good, just point the screen vaguely at your face. If it's properly dark or you're wearing sunglasses it won't work, but will just prompt for a password.

e2a: It's easy enough that, as you can see above, I genuinely forgot how it worked. Maybe had a bit to drink, just finished a project, but either way.

Can they be fooled with a (printed) photo of you?

this thread is slightly ridiculous. No one is actually pro cashless society on here as far as I can tell. But holding up cash is the only way to go, celebrating cash only businesses. Well I aint shopping there. actually I went into a café the other day and it was cash only. Luckily I did have some cash. I dumped the change in a pot on the side at home. Don’t know when I will use it.

Out of interest, how is that not pro cashless? Use no cash then whenever its dumped on you its useless.

Well I’m not telling other people not to use cash. Just making consumer choices man. And you cash only freaks have not really helped me when I can’t use a cash machine. So yeah.

OK, if you're that flush; I make sure that I use all my coins; I love it when I can get my daily stuff at the supermarket and pay in coins.

What? I hate having cash. Are you arguing with the right person?

I get my main shop online. I will probably spend them in the pub at some point. Or a corner shop.
Thing is though, I know when I’m overdrawn because I get a text message and can check the app on my phone. As opposed to going into the bank good luck with that, or using an ATM. that’s just how I track my money, with apps and stuff. Each to their own. But let’s not pretend cash is wholly accessible. I hate to go on about it but it’s a pain in the arse for lots of people. so yeah, cash and digital. Let’s have both. I mean I can’t actually use cash only businesses if I don’t have cash on me. ATMs are not accessible to blind people. If you are wheelchair user can you even get to it. Et cetera et cetera.

I mean, I've noticed we're all in danger of this becoming a mid-00s messageboard argument where we accidentally become trolls for the sake of it.

I prefer cash. I use cash more than card. I've said this on the thread before and I'd prefer if society always keeps cash as a safety net

I also believe, and I'm aware that my responses are in danger of getting a little "black or white" than I intend. There are benefits and conveniences to card and contactless payment which I've used over the past few months. I get that we can't turn back the tide.

"Cash only and nothing else" isn't feasible.
"Card/digital only and nothing else" isn't feasible nor.....dare I suggest..... inclusive.

No problem with that and I agree.

That’s the spirit!😀

Sorry I edited. Just context. I mean the post above has pretty much nailed it I think. I’ve just got a bit jaded with cash cash cash mantra of the thread. I do have sympathy for that not being tracked with everything angle. But for lots of us it’s just not practical. Man needs to eat and stuff..

Anyway. Who’s got a £5 coin? I have one, I don’t wanna spend it. It’s like a medallion.
I was thinking the other day that the Treasury could one day approve a circulating £5 coin as they did with the two-pound.

The journeys can be tracked, if you have an oyster account you can see your travel history for a few weeks. I don't know what travel info oyster would keep beyond that, and obviously if it's an unregistered card all they have is the travels of an oyster card. But on a phone I suppose it has to be registered and matched with a payment source at least.

It also went from hey this is a good idea to this is cheaper get one to this is the only reasonable way to travel on TfL in what, thirty years? Pretty swift, and everyone just kind of went with it because it was gradual and convenient.

Tend to agree with this; I too use contactless sometimes.

But maintaining a money system that all can use is a black and white issue of inclusivity. And for me, I like the fact that cash leaves little or no data that the fuckers can exploit or monetise.

Oh I didn’t know that they weren’t accepted. My late father gave it to me, whilst he was alive, I gave him a £5 note for it. It’s like it a coin you would design as a kid. I like it as an object.
