The Amazing Mr Blunden. But which one? Which one?

Did anyone else watch Mark Gatiss' remake of this? Set in the modern era, it was almost a scene-for-scene remake - I compared a couple of scenes with the original as I was watching it - and I quite enjoyed it. Gatiss himself had fun playing Mr Wickens, and a couple of the original actors had cameos. But no "Bloomin' 'enry!" and no empty grave shot. The closing credits are still embarassing, though, but I sat through them for old times' and for the sake of completeness. Anyone who went to Alderney Middle School in Poole in the early 70s would have loved this. They used to show movies in the assembly hall after school, and the original was shown several times by popular demand.

I have yet to catch the remake. I was hoping that they would have kept to the Edwardian setting - but I’m sure Gattis did a fine job.

I actually went to a premier of the original back in1972 with my school (St Georges, Southwark, London)

I can’t remember which cinema but assume it was The Odeon, Leicester Square.

Afterwards we had lunch at The Hilton, Park Lane. Some of the cast came around to the tables.

I particularly remember Diana Dors - she was loverly and charming.

I didn't like the new one. Not sure why. But it reminded me how much I LOVED the original, so I ordered the dvd of it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Diana Dors was neither lovely nor charming in the original, but very memorable, as she was in that film based on the Ruth Ellis story. It's a pity she ended up so typecast.

I saw the new version at Christmas. I was disappointed when I realised it wasn't the original, but my niece's loved it, which is really what's important. I ordered the novel from Amazon for them and the last I heard one was very keen to start reading it.
