The Alt-Right

“I get it’s a public space, so if people are holding signs outside and they are being peaceful, even if I don’t agree with the things that they are saying, I don’t feel necessarily like my life is in danger. But when a group of known violent people, you know, at that point when those people show up and they’re coming into the library and trying to disrupt the story time. That’s when I felt unsafe and that’s where I felt it was not held appropriately,” Jones said. “And they’re doing that on purpose for sure to intimidate people.”

For context, Jones arrived at the library around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, and story time stared at 5:30 p.m. Jones said she only saw a handful of peaceful protestors outside, but not any Proud Boys.

“They were dressed, what I would describe as like, normally,” Jones said. “I didn’t feel threatened by their attire, they were holding signs that said things like, the library is responsible for child abuse, and keep pornography out of our libraries.”

About 45 minutes later, things changed.

“And then I heard some commotion outside. I remember seeing one guy’s face on the glass, and he was glaring at us, and trying to antagonize us. And a group of probably I would say, like maybe six or so others, they kind of paraded down the hall, like they were very clearly trying to antagonize us,” Jones said.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office had deputies at the event to prevent the Proud Boys from entering the room.

Angie Kahney was in the hallway outside of the event room when the Proud Boys walking in and she says the group was loud and disruptive.

But in a statement the sheriff’s office says there was no disturbance.

“They were like yelling obscenities about how their tax money was being spent on pornography and drag queens,” Kahney said. “There was shouting, it was loud. Like their attempt was to intimidate and create a disruption and that’s exactly what they did.”

Jones agreed saying, “they definitely disturbed us.”

The sheriff’s office added because it’s a public place there was no need for the Proud Boys to be removed.

The sheriff’s office declined an on-camera interview, but did release a statement from Sheriff McMahon that reads: “I took an oath not to uphold opinions, but to uphold the law. Which is exactly what my supervisor and Deputies did.”

Jones says even 24 hours later, she still has an uneasy feeling about how the incident panned out.

“It’s so terrifying that they were just able to show up in the middle of an event and come in the library, like that and just walk straight back there to that room that was very scary. I feel very thankful that nothing worse happened, for sure.”

A spokesperson with the county also said in a statement: “The library ensured they had additional staff and volunteers present at the event, and they coordinated ahead of time with the Sheriff’s Office to help ensure the safety of all patrons and staff. There was pre-planning that took place to help ensure the environment inside the event was positive and safe for all attendees.”

Ah - so it is the victims fault.

just another day ...

A Seattle man was charged with felony stalking following an incident where he allegedly stood outside U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal's home, yelling expletives while he was armed with a pistol.

The King County Prosecutor's Office requested $500,000 in bail, claiming the defendant, Brett Forsell, is "likely to commit a violent offense if free in the community," according to court documents.

Forsell also allegedly told investigators he would return to Jayapal's home as soon as he is released. Forsell was armed with a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol with a live round in the chamber while outside of the representative's home, according to court documents.

On July 9, Jayapal and her husband heard loud yelling coming from outside their home in West Seattle around 10:30 p.m., according to court documents. Jayapal's husband, Steve Williamson, went out on the front porch to investigate and the couple heard male voices yelling expletives and saying "Go back to India."

The couple also heard a voice telling Jayapal to harm herself and other comments alleging she was a communist. When Williamson opened the door, he said one of the males got back into a vehicle driven by the other male and sped away.

Jayapal reported the incident to 911 and said there was a similar incident in front of her home the weekend before, on July 2.

Regarding the 'alt-right', in Italy a far-right alliance which includes the neo-fascist Fratelli d’Italia are looking likely to win the general election on the 25th September. Fratelli d'Italia leader Giorgia Meloni is the favourite from the far-right coalition to become head of government.

full disclosure, I didn't post this thinking it was risible. this is the sort of rhetoric Trump has validated, a constant stream of threat and dehumanization - hunt them down, isolation camps, for their own protection, all contrasted with "we" - that has led to the Buffalo massacre most recently. I post this stuff to let people abroad know what the daily texture of life is here.

I've heard similar ideas in regard to homeless folks.

Here's an example from Florida about the rules they've handed down for teachers and librarians in Sarasota Co., FL:

Yesterday teachers in Sarasota County were told:

*No purchases or donations of any kind of books or reading materials
*No Scholastic book orders for teachers
*No book fairs
*Parents can request alternative instructional materials for ANYTHING we teach
*If we want to read anything to our kids, we have to get it approved in advance
*Don’t give kids any gifts tied to reading
*Our amazing librarian can’t even do read alouds with our youngest students.

Is this what you want for your children? Only allowing them to view what’s in state approved textbooks?
Some counties in FL are only allowing textbooks to teach the standards. If a teacher wants to read a book to his/her students in our county, he/she must get it approved first.

Interesting indeed. Does left and right really mean anything at the end of the day? All that really matters to politicians is money and power and even the left go authoritarian, capitalist and basically reactionary when they gain power.
