Ten cryptics

JuanTwoThree

Anecdotage
R.I.P.
My tuppence worth. All these are Urban75 things. They are just the cryptic part with no reference to the word or expression itself. I have no idea if 10 is also the minutes it takes to do each one or do the lot. We'll see.

1 Treat the cloth, Sir David (ed) and a speedy respite in a roundabout way

2 Hanging out lachrymosely with a taciturn knight

3 Forbid the meat-curer

4 LA thug and cotton on

5 Round in circles in a Tory Bondlike name

6 Below Texas 28 g

7 Plural gear for a fish-eating day

8 Chemical curls with the Ayotollah's 8th month

9 Inside cough apparatus by the sound of it

10 Jimmy Young Football Club Tugboat

I think it's because they're crap clues. It might be fun to have them critiqued

1 Full (as in put a nap on cloth) English (Sir David English, editor) Breakfast (fast break)

4 Cal lout thread

5 CON spiral 00 n

7 Friday threads

10 JYFC tugboat anagram of Tobyjug fact

Only just seen this, didn't get a chance to have a go.

If anyone is starting any more of these crossword type threads, can they post a link in the previous thread?

Is Friday threads a thing?

You sure about that? :D

I don't think LA = Cal and Cal is Ca.

I don't get the 'full' bit of 1 even after you've explained it.

Beginning of 5 is good, just need something better for 00

Overall, crossword clues are best when they a) make sense in a sentence (rather than just random words like 10) and b) give misdirection.

But for this I kinda blanched at the theme. Urban things. And I really hate the phrase knobbing and sobbing, however much its a part of Urban.

To full is to raise the nap on a cloth. It's where the surname Fuller comes from.

TBF California State Uni is Cal State and there is this

In hindsight the 00 could have been model trains

Oh well, perhaps 'fun' wasn't the word I was looking for. Instructive? I'll stick to doing ie solving cryptics, I'm good at that.

I think LA for Cal is fair enough, not 'the classic' but acceptable.

'Full' is very precise, almost obscure, knowledge, but fair enough, thats part of the fun!

7 - hmm, there are friday threads, but are probably better known as weekend threads

10 - that is excellent

Fullers used to buy human urine from associates of pure-finders, who collected dog shit to sell to bookbinders. Like albionism 's hobby monetized.

Which gave rise to this folk etymology
