Spain vs Switzerland

I think germany are going to go on and and win the whole thing.

Based on one game? Bad thinking .... most of the teams that win it have indifferent starts, or at least one bad game that they're lucky to win in the knock-out stages.

In 2006, Italy (the winners) drew 1-1 with the States in their group and were exceptionally fortunate to beat the Aussies 1-0 in the second round. France (finalists) drew two of their group games against Switzerland and South Korea.

In 2002, Brazil played rubbish against Turkey in the semi as I recall and scraped a 1-0 win.

In 1998, France needed extra time to beat Paraguay 1-0 in the second round.

1994: Italy were runners-up having scored only two goals in the group stages and finishing third in their group, having famously lost to Ireland.

Perhaps most famous of all is 1982. Italy drew all three group games, again scoring two goals, before playing some of the greatest games of all time on the way to the final.

Best example of a team with a flying start that then falters is from 1982 as well - Hungary smashed El Salvador 10-1 in their first game but were eliminated from their group.

There is a lot more football to be played yet, so no-one should despair about the paucity of goals so far.
Cheers, Statto.

and now for some mercifully serious and thoughtful comment on this game......

Based on the fact they won the eurovision song contest and it's just the outcome I dont want to happen because all the germans i know will be absolutely sickening lol. It is quite likely that they will win it though. They play really good football and actually play as a team rather than a group of random people that don't know why they're there.

It's a fucking disaster :(

Oh well. Perhaps not being favourites any more will ease off some pressure (though if anything they looked a little too relaxed for their own good).

By my calculations, if Spain finish second (likely now) they would most likely meet Brazil in the first playoff game. I would fancy Brazil in that - hence this game against the Swiss could be a deciding moment in them going home as per usual.
