Soviet Bootlegs Of Banned Records Printed On Discarded X-Ray Plates

you know the regime was on its last legs to have allowed such decadence
great record

Do you think they might have a had a sneaking suspicion foreign musical influences were creeping into the country, when your average muscovite was pumping out Harlem basslines?

Have Soul Jazz beaten us to this? Can't we get an Urban 75 comp done and on sale in Rough Trade. Anyone want to dig around in the bins At King's College hospital? The hipsters will go for the X-ray angle.

There were differences but there was also a lot the same - in the case of Poland it too had one censored record label. Why do you think its so wrong to talk about the two alongside each other?

BTW from a comment on one of the links above

Never said there was, did I? There were a lot of differences between these societies, despite external Soviet domination. Also, there is that difference between societies that only recently came under Communist rule by way of armed occupation and a society (empire of various societies) that went through collapse and decades of revolutionary change.

I think some of the new generation of Soviet film directors that appeared during the brief Khrushchevskaya ottepel were stilyagi. And that Soviet youth subculture (the means to be a part of it) at that particular time was pretty much restricted to the new intelligentsia that emerged as a result of the massive social mobility under earlier Stalinism, wasn't it?

you said it would "be good not to conflate the Soviet Union with the European 'People's Democracies." - im sure each country behind the curtain had its own unique issues but i think the general lack of access and censorship means its worth talking about them at the same time. I wasnt having a go, just wondered what you had in mind...

Not having a go, you say?

Damn this thread, I've ended up looking at pretty much everything on that junk culture website and buying a book of one of the photographers on it (they are stunning photos though).

edit: gonna start a thread about them

I've got a load of 70's Russian jazz LPs in the loft I got from a car boot years ago. They all look a bit like these two so might be on Leo, but I think mine are Russian, not English in manufacture:

As already talked about briefly in a previous post. A whole new thread could be started!

Unfortunately, thanks to an error by GOSPLAN there is a shortage of thread.

Thread production is at record highs. This is clearly Western propaganda and Idris is a CIA troublemaker.

This is an offical THANK YOU to Favelado for starting this thread and leading me to amazing tunes. :D

Ooh! You've turned it round and now I look mean. Well, fair enough. x
