Show us yer house and house-related meddlings

For teuchter's amusement I had another look at our door via a cut in the trim that was already there for whatever reason. To be honest I don't know what an undressed door frame should look like on a house like this (spacing and so on), but I'm sure it's not quite this:

I suspect that goes a long way up but can't be sure without more destructive disassembly. Quite right about the threshold though.

It's... really more of an idea at this point. That brown powder is not there by coincidence, and there's a lot of it.

The skirting board.
Sugar soap spray would be my first port of call, may soften it up, and ultimately helps remove the adhesive. For anything more stubborn, a scraper, probably plastic for use on wood. Depends how aggressive you want to be.

Well, that suggests that the threshold is not the main or only problem, and that water is getting in behind the frame somewhere higher up. I'd want to find out where and why. But as you say it would require some more destructive disassembly.

Is it quite exposed to the weather there? As in, does the wind blow the rain against that door?

Looking at your previous photos it seems likely the original design of the house didn't have a door in this position, and the 'inner' door was the front door with a covered but not enclosed porch. This outer door might have been boshed in at some point without really being detailed in a way appropriate for the location.

Probably not massively, mostly the weather gets the face of the house on the left of the door, but it will be a bit exposed.

The porch space is original but perhaps was simply open. There's other houses like this (we've been renting one) but you can't tell the history as they all have modern exterior doors now.

If you can lift that white riser you'll be able to tell, because the flooring looks continuous. If it is, then yes, it was probably open at one point.

Would anybody care to guess what this pair of poles and wire is for? (I know the answer, having looked at planning permission)

Am I reading this right?

Basically, we have rules that must be obeyed, unless you can find idiots to pay for a load of poles & wire around the area, and then they don't apply? :hmm:

That sort of thing. Or if you can find the legalistic loophole in God's Law then you win. The eruv is one of the nuttier examples of this but there's a lot, including putting timers on your household appliances so you don't have to actually press the switches on Sabbath, using pre-ripped loo roll so that you are 'neither creating nor destroying', etc etc. And of course 'covering your hair' with a glamorous pamela anderson style wig, for modesty.*
* i is a jew so am fully allowed to take the piss.

I've heard a lot of this nonsense from a couple of Jewish mates that totally reject, for want of better words, 'the old ways', and they rip the piss out of the 'elders', but this 'eruv' thing has taken me by surprise TBH. :D

Wow. An eruv. That’s... incredible.

So basically, if inside the eruv you can do things on the Sabbeth you wouldn’t usually be allowed to do, like use a Zimmer frame or switch the kettle on?

I can’t quite get my head round this

This gets me...

To cite one example, the eruv cannot cross any road used by more than 600,000 people - hence the eruv did not cross the M60 north of Prestwich.

At what point in history was this introduced? :hmm:
