Sheridan abandons hope for the SSP and tries to form new party

The article on France and particularly the alleged shortcoming of the LCR on the presidential campaign is absolute crap. The real position of the Ligue is explained here:
http://www.internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?article1171

From the SW article it is hard to believe that the French co-thinkers/section of the SWP are actually members of the LCR and take part in its conference debates and are able to put forward alternative lines. Unlike the structures of the SWP, the LCR allows minorities to put forward positions both in pre-congress debates and between. The French SWP took part in a tendency that gained 9% of the delegate votes at the last LCR congress. Any SWP member writing an article of this sort, strongly criticising their own organisation in another international paper, would have been expelled before the ink was dry on the paper. The reports on the recent SWP conference continues to indicate there is no real debate or alternative position allowed.

The danger of the SWP's position on the presidential election is that any united left candidate put forward on their lines (and in practice most likely to be the PCF's Buffet) would have been ambiguous on the question of supporting the Socialist Party in government. It is a similar position to that put forward by the SWP itself before it joined the Socialist Alliance and helped launch Respect, when it was the enthusiastic supporter of Labour in the election period, only to turn round and denounce it and concentrate on building outside electoral politics (in 'the movement') outside the election process. This seperation of electoralism and refusing to tackle the issue of governmental programme is classic syndicalism, which the SWP appeared to be moving away from. Alas this does not appear to be the case in France and there is a danger of it becoming so in Britain.

Oh the fucking irony!!!

"However, individuals are less important than the case for socialism itself - and the case has been damaged by bitterness and division.

"No one wanted to be divided but that was the reality. It is irresponsible to live in the past. We have to look to the future."

Tommy Sheridan calls for left-wing parties to call a truce

Dec 9 2008 By Magnus Gardham

TOMMY Sheridan yesterday called on Scotland's warring socialist parties to call a truce and work together at the next General Election.

The former MSP claimed the ongoing feud between his Solidarity party and the Scottish Socialist Party was "irresponsible".

And he called for a pact to stop left-wing parties in Scotland - including Arthur Scargill's Socialist Labour Party - from standing against each other at the next election.

Sheridan was a founder member of the SSP but quit to set up Solidarity two years ago, after his defamation case against a Sunday paper caused a bitter split in his old party.

The rift has been blamed for both parties' poor showing at the last Holyrood election, when neither won a seat after fighting each other at the polls.

But yesterday, Sheridan said: "It's our desire to work towards a situation where, in the future, we can support a united socialist candidate."

He added: "There is no one in Solidarity who is aware of the depth of the bitterness more than me.

"However, individuals are less important than the case for socialism itself - and the case has been damaged by bitterness and division.

"No one wanted to be divided but that was the reality. It is irresponsible to live in the past. We have to look to the future."

Sheridan did not propose a merger of parties.

But he urged left-wing trade unions to "bang heads together" to forge a pact between Solidarity, the SSP, SLP and single-issue campaigners.

He claimed the failure of left-wing parties to work together was letting down working class families.

Sheridan, now a law student, said the pact was "not dependent" on his ongoing perjury case.

Sheridan spoke out at the launch of a Solidarity pamphlet, The Bubble Bursts, calling for nationalisation of the banks and energy companies.

The move is the first olive branch from either side in the Solidarity and SSP split.

Two years ago, Sheridan won £200,000 in court after a Sunday paper claimed he took part in drug-fuelled sex parties.

But during the hearing, the jury heard conflicting evidence from SSP members.

Sheridan and wife Gail, a key witness, were charged with perjury last December after a 14-month police probe.

Prosecutors have until next March to continue the case or drop the charges.

The former MSP said: "It's deeply frustrating. We have no information whatsoever. We look forward to a speedy and positive conclusion.

"I've always believed and I continue to profess my complete innocence of perjury."

The perjury investigation has cost more than £1million, it was revealed at the weekend.

He's either totally deluded, or just brazen. I strongly suspect the latter.

Or both...

By all accounts it was an SWP dominated Solidarity branch that moved a motion at the recent Solidarity conference calling for moves to Left Unity. Cardonald Branch-Sheridans own branch-put in an amendment saying in practise fine but we won't work with scabs, Murdoch spies etc etc blah blah drivel drivel, effectively vetoing any 'co-operation' with anyone in the SSP. Cardonald amendment was defeated. It is also becoming clear that some SWP memebrs are telling some folk that they are no longer Solidarity members.

Sheridans opus on co-operation also rings hollow given his recent refusal to share a platform with an SSP speaker at the John Maclean march.

All said and done the cynic in me is thinking that Sheridan wants to be friends again to try and stop what he sees coming at a rate of knots....

....

From what i have seen the SWP have become increasingly isolated from Solidarity recenly in any event

As to the substance of this, great news as far as i am concerned. At very least an electoral alliance/ non aggression pact

If not this, what else can be suggested to rebuld the scottish left which is rapibly losoing its credibility?

A hand of comradeship which the SSP should accept

35 CAMERAS TO FOLLOW SHERIDAN IN BIG BROTHER HOUSE

The 44-year-old, who founded the Solidarity party after splitting from the SSP, snubbed a big-money offer to appear in the 2007 series of the show.

But producers have talked him round — and last night our insider confirmed: “Yes, Tommy is in.

“Channel 4 have already secretly filmed an interview with him in Glasgow and he’s set to stir it all up and get on everyone’s nerves.”

Sheridan has previously admitted being a big fan of the hit reality series, saying: “It’s mind-numbing claptrap, but I can’t help it.”

And speaking about his decision not to go on last time, he said: “They made a very generous offer but there were no guarantees of communicating my political ideas.”

Apparently, Big Tommy & GG are chums. I wonder if Big Tommy has asked GG's advice.

I reckon Big Tommy's making a mistake here, but WTF? It won't be his first or worst mistake and, supposing that at some point he'll stand again in some election, his prospective voters in Glasgae may be less put off by daft sleb antics on that crap TV freak show than GG's Bangladeshi voters in east London were.
