Self-indulgent pet thread

She finds the most awkward places to sleep.

A fox got two of the chickens last night :( Enid's gone and Egg is now buried under a tree (we made an egg-shaped tombstone). Elvis managed to get away, but injured her leg; she's recovering in Juliette's room and, amazingly, still laying eggs! When she's up and about again we'll get two new hens because she can't be left alone. I know how the fox got in and it's not going to happen again. My poor chicken babies. They were really happy :(

I'm so sorry to hear that :(

Sorry about Enid and Egg :(

Glad Elvis is still here to fight the good fight (and provide healthy breakfasts). Get better soon, Elvis.

I'm sorry to hear this sam. Unfortunately the fox will be back. :( They can chew through conventional "chicken wire" and even weld-mesh, jump to a height of six feet, dig down across and up. They will push things, pull things and generally do whatever it takes to get to your chooks.
If possible the coop and run should be on a concrete base no less than 150mm thick and the external wire of the run should project below that.
You're doing a great thing in re-homing these poor birds and I wish you all the best. :)

I'm hoping that if it was the coop being insecure the fox would have got to them sooner than two weeks; it's surrounded by concrete, with thick chicken wire under the coop as well as over and around in two different layers. My daughter left the nesting box unlocked, so that's how the fox got in :(

Elvis is doing OK. She's sleeping in my daughter's room with a fluffy hot water bottle, stinking the place out, drinking camomile tea and eating porrage. She's so cute when she eats from my hand :)
