Redcar Save Our Steel, Port Talbot and UK steelworks fight for their future

Just announced via BBC breaking news ticker that plant will be mothballed with loss of 1700 jobs.

The Tories have responded with a bored shrug and the promise of a task force for those losing their jobs. Labour have rightly hammered them for that, but so far no comment about what a Corbyn led party would do in these circumstances.

Then you have Osborn over in China banging on about investment in a northern powerhouse,(which we already had until the Tories destroyed it) the Chinese have dumped millions of tons of cheap steel on the world markets. That results in this. All bastards and now up to 8000 workers and their families will be affected due to the suppliers and service providers for the now to be mothballed steelworks in this already devasted region going out of business!

Shit to hear.

I did 13 years in a rod and bar mill before the same thing happened to us. It reopened 6 months later with 60% of the workforce getting 60% of the previous wage and none of us active in the union getting jobs there.

That Community is the union involved doesn't fill me with any hope. When they were the ISTC they were known in the mill as I'm Scared To Complain.

Poor buggers who work there - I doubt there'll be enough jobs in Teesside to provide alternative work, and certainly not at a decent rate of pay. :(

Government are twats for allowing this to happen - but sadly it isn't the first time, and won't be the last.

Remember they have no control over these forces...until the macro-economic metrics show some minuscule improvement.

Some of those steels have quality issues. They may be cheap to buy but if they're not up to standard can cause expensive issues to fix later on.

I meant to say substandard quality in the post but I got into a rant!
Most of the lads I work with at the moment are all ex British Steel. Rotherham and Sheffield.
They have been through this themselves and cannot believe that people think the Tories will do anything other than drive the last nail home with as much force as their feeble wrists can muster.

Just heard Kiveton Park Steels near Sheffield gone into liquidation.
Another 120 jobs gone.:(
On the BBC local web news.
Cannot link as am at work posting from phone.

This image from a BBC story about Dorman Long shows how Redcar steelmakers have left their mark on the world.

Fucking disgrace, and Cameron and Co wont give a shit as that area doesn't vote Tory.
The steel union Community are worse than rubbish they've done absolutely nothing to save the steel industry. There should have been a strike and occupation of the steel plants when they announced the closure of Redcar. Now they pick areas and plants off one at a time
