Redcar Save Our Steel, Port Talbot and UK steelworks fight for their future

At the moment there seems to be a plan to raise the issue politically local Labour MP Anna Turley got a debate in Parliament last week but I don't think this type of campaigning alone can work. I would hope the Steel Unions would prepare Industrial Action and demonstrations. I hope they demonstrate at the TUC demonstration in Manchester October 4th which is against Austerity.
Redcar finds its fighting spirit as steelworks’ future hangs in the balance

Two among dozens of things I don't understand: there's coal waiting in ships offshore that SSI can't pay for (so how were they able to buy the plant and get into this sort of mess in the first place, surely they didn't take any money out?), and HMG keep saying there are EU rules that stop them intervening. I can't see the French being bothered by rules like that.

ETA: I mean, the French for example, not that they have a role in this afaik.

didn't something similar happen twenty odd years ago when it was going to close or maybe did for a bit?

I worked at the beam mill for a few months, sub contracting doing construction work though not directly employed. Just walking backwards and forwards through it you ended up black, or the inside of your nose certainly did.

I've got annual leave coming up in Oct so hope to pop along to any pickets happening either there or the Pay The Rate one at Wilton.

Where? I've been looking all over Google for his response. But yeah, this govt is hardly going to renationalise, is it, so this is just pissing in the wind. (Respectfully)

I used to work at Lackenby Rod Mill

Thank you everyone for being so supportive on this .I must point out I am an ex steelworker I am a concerned at what is happening to my local community. I was brought up in a local Steelwork town called South Bank it and neighbouring towns like Grangetown are like former Pit villages. Bigger towns like Middlesbrough and Redcar are full of charity and pound shops.

I knew someone that had a narrow boat made to order, to live on, when they retired. They insisted that the steel was British due to the inferior
quality of the imported stuff.
