I've always thought that if they sent the army to places like Afghanistan without guns and had them fixing infrastructure instead of trashing the place then the 'war on terror' would be finished by now

I know that they all do training to run and fight ...

So you do indeed need to be a soldier to be in the army.

I'm from Rugby near Coventry and since they fixed up the road in 2004 we have had pretty much zero Al-Qaida or ISIL presence. Even in the surrounding villages

I think that it's a valid idea. When I was 18 I worked in a supermarket and a pub. I wish that I had learned how to fix a tank or something

Every wrongun I grew up with either ended up in prison or the forces (sometimes both obv)

When I lived in Germany (early '80s) where they had national service and a conscript army, my friends couldn't believe that UK and USA had a "Berufsarmee" (professional army). They were aghast that anyone would be stupid enough to sign up for military service if it wasn't required by law.

Armed forces. I applied to join the Irish Defence Forces as an officer cadet when I was 18 but they saw through my thin facade of respectability and off I went to a life of dissolution in London.

The police tried to recruit my wife a couple of weeks ago. She was running a stall for a charity at a community center on a Deptford estate and they approached her and really gave it the hard sell. Lots of you're just the kind of person we need and you can do a lot of good in your local community.
