Pancake Day 2019

Maggot

The Cake of Liberty
It's today.

I've recently discovered pancake made with gram flour, they are easy to make and vegan. So will be having those, haven't decided on toppings yet.

Rachel Roddy recipe
For pancakes, whisk 250g chickpea flour, 450ml cold water and a big pinch of salt into a batter with the consistency of smooth single cream. It then needs to sit for at least two and up to 24 hours, in which time it will bubble and thicken a little. When it is time to fry, heat a generous tablespoon of olive oil in a small, nonstick frying pan and add a ladleful of batter, then swish it round as you would a pancake, aiming for something about 5mm thick. Once the edges are crisp, lift to check the underside. When it is deep golden, flip and cook the other side, then slide on to a plate.
I used a bit less water and it was fine.

What are you having?

Since I have a bag of gram flour, I think I will be having what you're having :)

I have so far failed to make buckwheat crepes very appetising - and there is another Breton speciality I need to master. :-

Far breton (végétalien, vegan)

Just need to order my bombarde and master basic traditional dance steps and a few words of Breton and I'll be a shoe-in :D

I'm using soya milk this year. Mine is slightly sweetened so I have high hopes. On the other hand I am really shit at making pancakes so it's in the lap of the gods

I make pancakes virtually every day at work and have switched to vegan ones about 6 months ago. I find gram flour a bit too wholesome tbh (unless I'm doing something like Indian carrot pancakes, where it works). You can make vegan ones easily by just using self raising flour, a bit of extra baking powder, some salt, veg/sunflower oil and soya milk. The trick is to add the liquid to the flour slowly and give it a good beating for a minute or two when it becomes a wet dough, then slowly mix in the remainder of the liquid :)

I love lemon and sugar.
Followed in second place by maple syrup.

I like maple syrup too but it has NO PLACE on Pancake Day pancakes.

Actually I bend my pancake fascism slightly and we also have butter inside, which my husband claims is Norwegian (unclear whether he just says this because he knows I can't argue with appeals to his heritage).

Well...I really like maple syrup on pancakes and today is THE day for pancakes. Lots and lots of them.
If I could, I think I would just drink the maple syrup on its own but there are pancakes to drown :D

:(

They aren't that difficult. Try another recipe?
I have 30 years of experience of cooking. Pancakes, I'm afraid, I have a blind spot with, largely cos I never follow a recipe. Also I'm pissed off at having to take my son out in the floods to his gymnastics class later so I think I'll call it a night. I don't even like them!

We bought some as neither of us can reliably make them and have none of the ingredients. Savoury first, we had mushroom, chorizo and mozzarella.

I’ve remembered how sickly I find pancakes.

Mr Looby is ready for the sweet ones, I am not.

I'm currently having some home-made mature cheddar & lardon pancakes with mature cheddar and ham pancakes to follow. The first ever savoury pancakes that I've made myself.

The cheddar and lardons taste good but are a bit of a faff to eat since the filling hasn't melted properly. Hopefully the ham and cheese pancakes will be more coherent.
