Pancake Day/Fat Tuesday 2020

Got my neices today so going to teach them how to make them. They have decided they want American style once with chocolate chips, bananas, blueberries and ice cream. It's going to be a right mess :D

If anyone's got a good recipe for American style ones that would be great!

How thin - or thick - should the batter for (crepe style) pancakes be?

And how can I make my batter thicker?

Some of the online recipes talk about using a bit of baking soda - should I be doing that?

I wouldn't add any raising agent to the batter for crepes.
Leave the batter to stand for around 20 mins, that might help thicker it up. It's normally the consistency of cream (ish).

I had fluffy buttermilk pancakes for breakfast with maple syrup and bacon.

This afternoon will be ftw's first proper pancake day. Will try her on baked beans /daily mash. Or lemon and sugar. I will probably have a lemon and sugar to keep her company as I'm an excellent mother.

I will be having cheese and mushroom followed by ice cream and squirty cream and maybe chocolate sauce if I make some.

I ended up making them with gram flour. I had veggie sausage in tomato sauce in the savoury ones and apple with sugar for sweet. AM VERY FULL.

Pancakes for tea is going to be difficult tomorrow because of the time I'm working til. If I'm feeling heroic I might manage to do them for everyone's breakfast.
I was not feeling heroic at breakfast time but did manage to achieve feeding the kids, me and Mr W two different dinners AND make pancakes afterwards this evening after work so my hero status remains unquestionable.

Aren’t American ones just what we call Scotch Pancakes aka drop scones?

I made delicious thin ones earlier, using oat milk. And had them with lemon and sugar because that’s what you’re supposed to have with thin pancakes.

If I had made the thick, drop scone, type, I would have had them with butter.

We had vegan drop scone variety ones made by the kids at our Woodcraft Folk group last night - surprisingly tasty.

I don't know tbh?

Culinarily leaning housemate got busy with Tenerife spicy sausage and cheese pan cakes followed by banana and honey and a hot chocolate each

I’m almost hallucinating on the sugar rush and general fatty goodness

..... and I have a fucking cholesterol bloods retest tomorrow...lots of shrugs and excuses no doubt

You make them thicker by adding more flour, or less milk.

Going to the football tonight, so don't have time to make pancakes. Will probably have them tomorrow instead.

Aye, earlier I thought we were going to have them today but OH slept most of the day and we're running into dinner prep time for which we already have stuff defrosted/defrosting for another meal (it's all been a bit chaotic due to his work rota being changed at the last minute).

So I think we'll probably have them tomorrow for breakfast/lunch instead - we're not religious or anything so it's just an excuse to make pancakes really, the day itself doesn't matter too much :D
