Palestine solidarity demos in the UK

I'm including Starmer and his ilk.

At first trying to stop MPs from attending matches in support of Palestinians.

In Labour party in my local area Lambeth the party leadership use more coded language like supporting a ceasefire was "divisive" in a multicultural borough like Lambeth. Removing party whip from Cllrs who supported it.

So it's been more subtle at times from labour party.
I think it's a mistake to see him, and the Labour Party, as left wing. I'm not trying to be picky with you; I think this is important - Overton Window and that.

There may be a few individual MPs in Labour who are left of centre - those that Starmer hasn't ousted - but the party as a whole is absolutely right wing. Look at their "party of business" spiel. Look at their stance on asylum seekers. On benefit claimants. And of course on what's being done to the people of Gaza. They're to the right of a lot of late 20th/early 21st century Tories.

I totally agree with you on the LP and Starmer in particlar on Gaza. He disgusts me with his doublespeak when people are being killed and injured there every day. He is supporting genocide.

Fair enough.

The Lambeth Labour Cllr who the ruling right wing Labour group suspended indefinitely for voting for Green Party motion at Lambeth Council meeting for Lambeth Council supporting a ceasefire was the only Jewish Cllr. He happen to be spokesperson for Momentum

He was the sole Cllr from Momentum

All the rest either keep their heads down or are Progress supporters. So got few months suspension. He was singled out for being on the left.

Lambeth Council fell over itself to adopt the IHRA plus examples not just for the local Labour party but for the whole of Lambeth with little consultation amongst the ethnic minority groups who make up Lambeth population.

It was merely a move to attack Corbyn

The irony that a Labour Council which adopted IHRA then in effect de selects a Jewish Cllr ( indefinite suspension means in effet he will not be reselected for seat) is lost on them

IMO the right of party and Starmer going on about rooting out anti semitism is entirely cynical. And done for factional purposes.

Agree, could Cameron or Hague be seen as being further right than Starmer if you ignore the rosette colour?

Two planned visits by the Israeli ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, to Scottish synagogues have been cancelled as a group of Scots Jews call on her visit north of the border to be scrapped.

The ambassador was due to visit the Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation on Tuesday June 4, and Garnethill Synagogue, Glasgow the following day.

Protests were planned in both locations due to the ongoing war in the Gaza strip, as well as comments by ambassador Hotovely, who has been described as "ultra-right-wing".
However, it's understood both visits have now been cancelled with the Israeli embassy blaming a "scheduling conflict".
A former deputy foreign minister, she supports the construction of settlements on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, declaring "this land is ours, all of it is ours".
After being appointed ambassador to the UK she declared the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from land in what would become the state of Israel, as "an Arab lie".
In 2015 ambassador Hotovely declared "my dream is to see the Israeli flag flying over the Temple Mount", a site considered holy in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

In 2011, she invited the group Lehava to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. Lehava is an anti-miscegenation group which opposes relations between Jews and non-Jews, as well as the presence of Muslims and Christians in what it deems the Holy Land. In 2015 its leader called for Christians to be expelled, writing "let's throw the vampires out of our land before they drink our blood again".

Ambassador Hotovely said she had invited the group as it is "important to examine procedures for preventing mixed marriages" between Jews and Arabs.

She has also described Israeli human rights NGOs as an "enemy" within the state.

Her visit was opposed by a group of Scottish Jews who signed an open letter, and are now calling on the Scottish Government to any future visit to the country, and put "maximum pressure" on Westminster to expel her from the UK.

In the letter they said: "As Scottish Jews we are appalled that the Israeli Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, is making a visit to Scotland while the killing continues in Gaza, and we call on the Scottish Government and our community leaders to send a strong message against her visit.

"As Scottish Jews we believe that Hotovely's values and politics have no place in our community and faith organisations. We are particularly appalled that the Israeli embassy has approached synagogues to offer meetings with hostages’ families, while Netanyahu and Likud, the party the Ambassador represented in Israel, have declared that the recovery and safety of the hostages are not a priority in their war on Gaza. Among our number are Orthodox, Liberal and Reform Jews as well as those from other denominations, including religious and secular Jews. We unite against the association of Judaism with Israeli state policy, and with the weaponisation of Jewish identity to justify war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"We therefore call on the Scottish Government and our community leaders to send a strong message against her visit. We thank the Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation and Garnethill Synagogue for listening to the concerns of the Jewish community and cancelling the Ambassador’s visit to both synagogues."

Loads arrested in Cardiff :(

South Wales Police said a protest involving between 50 and 60 people took place in central Cardiff on Monday afternoon, during which a 36-year-old man from Swansea was arrested on "suspicion of wilful obstruction of the highway and conspiracy to commit public nuisance".

A "further spontaneous protest" took place at Cardiff Bay police station on Monday evening, with 16 people arrested on "suspicion of violent behaviour at a police station", the force said.

All those arrested remain in custody and enquiries are ongoing, it added.

Cymru Students for Palestine said it was "disgusted and furious" at police behaviour.

JOIN US NEXT WEEK - NO PALANTIR IN THE NHS - WEDS 12th JUNE - MANCHESTER

🇵🇸This year, the conference of NHS management, trusts and providers is sponsored by the military AI company Palantir. Palantir are currently providing their advanced technology to support the Israeli Occupation Forces to commit genocide in Palestine. As Israel destroys every hospital in Gaza, buries patients alive and tortures doctors, NHS management are giving our public money and data to a company arming the genocide.

📍On Wednesday June 12th from 7.45am a coalition of groups in Manchester will be rallying outside the conference. Bring banners, speakers, flags and your friends!

✊🏽We demand NHS leaders immediately cancel the contract with Palantir, bring all data management in house, end the privatisation and asset stripping of the NHS to private corporations, and end all NHS deals with companies complicit in the Israeli occupation.

(somehow they managed to make it so the actual location wasn't shown until the 4th slide in the insta post and not at all in the caption).

I was at the demo today in central London.

Great atmosphere. Took some photos with my new camera so have to work out how to upload them.

Its heartening to see the enthusiasm of the people who came,

As in previous demos its not the just the usual suspects. Plenty of home made banners and groups who were not aligned with the usual suspects.

I do not have a problem with the Trot groups who do attend.

Its that these demos represent a section of British public opinion who don't get taken seriously.

A few Trade Union banner. But not many. No Labour party

These demos are the people who do not get listened to.

Not part of the established labour movement or political parties.

I noticed the Jewish Bloc is now a fixture of these demos. Well organised group of different Jewish Groups who oppose Israel state actions in Gaza and / or are Anti Zionist.

All credit to them. Best organised Bloc on the demo.

Novara Media did this on the demo. What people say I agree is general sentiment of those who attend. Expect little from a Starmer government Or the rest of the political establishment

On what is store when Starmer is PM. This is the Jewish Labour Movement on the role they played in getting Faiza Shaheem deselected. Something they are quite happy about.

Now anti semitism is referring to an Israeli lobby and Israel being an Apartheid state.

Secondly what Ive seen my local right wing Council in Lambeth do. Supporting Palestinian rights is seen as not being responsible on community cohesion.

Community cohesion means not going on about Israel

JLM are longstanding part of Labour party from early days. Labour party traditionally has been pro Zionist. The Labour Zionist version.

JLM of course oppose Netanyahu. He is from different wing of Zionism,

Branches of Barclays bank have been targeted by protestors across the England and Scotland - 20 buildings, according to Palestine Action.

In Bristol, the windows of a city centre branch of Barclays Bank were smashed and red graffiti sprayed over the building.

Meanwhile, in Edinburgh, rocks inscribed with the names of Palestinians killed in the conflict were thrown at a Barclays building, the protesters said.

City of London police said three men, aged between 34 and 45, had been arrested in connection with criminal damage at the Barclays on Moorgate on Monday morning.

It is one of several branches in the capital which appear to have been targeted.

Images suggest Barclays buildings in St John’s Wood, north London, Croydon, Richmond, south-west London, and Peckham and Croydon in south London also appear to have been targeted.

Meanwhile, Barclays buildings in Stockport and Bury, both in Greater Manchester, and Preston, Lancashire, have also been adorned in red paint and damaged.

Barclays banks across UK targeted by pro-Palestine protesters

Palestine Action’s underground division and @shut_the_system target 20 Barclays branches across England and Scotland!

The bank invests in Israel’s largest weapons firm, Elbit Systems — our primary target. Shut the System is a new group aimed at fighting the climate crisis, targeting the bank over its fossil fuel investments.

Had a bit of hassle today - not made it down to any of the Saturday afternnon demos in a fair while, but there was a call for a trade union presence on the march today (I suspect from the SWP cos pretty much everyone else who turned up with union stuff seemed to be SWP members, but still, the idea seems worthwhile), so I turned up with a big Unison flag. There were a few Zionist agitators out in the crowd, and one of them went straight for me - I didn't realise what was going on at first cos he just started off with a relatively neutral "I didn't know that Unison was supporting this" so I started giving a friendly explanation of how Unison's national position is to support an immediate ceasefire. He then went off on a big rant about how it's disgusting for us to be supporting the demo because there's Jewish people who work in public services and we're "a government-backed trade union which is supposed to be neutral" and being Jewish is a protected characteristic so we shouldn't be discriminating, etc etc. Once I realised that he was just there to get into an argument I stopped responding, and then walked off when he said he was going to start filming. He also said he was going to ring Unison about this on Monday, so good luck to whoever has to answer the national helpline on Monday morning I suppose.

They still allowing cranks to hold up ‘Zionazi’ [sic] cards on the Manchester demos?

Didn't spot any today, kind of hard to police a demo though.

Saw some when I was out a couple of months ago and I found it astonishing that that type of sloppy and dangerous showing still gets through.

I guess the movement must have picked-up some newbies though with the intensity of the IDFs actions these last 8 months.
