Osama bin Laden killed by US forces in Pakistan

Cindy Sheehan doesn't think this is all it appears to be.

Not sure what to make of this one. I saw her speak in Dublin last year and she seemed a fairly sane and rational type.

There is a very obvious answer to her point and that is:

a) The parading of Saddams dead sons was recieved very poorly
b) The US have got a bit more wary of how they conduct themselves after all these years of conflict

It would be the end of Obama and the country would become a laughing stock if OBL suddenly popped up with a new video holding a copy of the latest Wall Street Journal. He is either dead or captured, there is no way they would get this wrong............is there?

Just heard on the news on Radio 6 that Obama's decided not to release photograhic evidence of Osama's corpse. Also breaking news thing on Reuters site. Nothing on the White House site so far on this.

But the set of possible conspiracy theories is uncountable (that's one way we know they're conspiracy theories: no pesky constraints).

Expect the Alex Jones "He's been in the fridge since 2002" to gain traction among Repugnicans.

As I said about the contents of the thumb drives apparently seized: they'll have much more credibility if they're leaked :)

What is said by nutters on the web and talk radio etc doesn't really matter, what is much more important is the fact that virtually no one in Pakistan (I'm sure in Arab countries too) believes a word that Obama says. This is a form of intellectual alienation and will only be fed by stupid decisions like this. A dangerous situation because this total lack of credibility amongst millions in the "Muslim world" creates a vacuum that will be filled by propaganda. Let's remember that as of this moment there is not a single scrap of evidence that Bin Laden is dead except the word of an American President. Not a single scrap. Release the photos for fucks sakes.

Give it a few year then the picture will be released.... by a leak...

Or in time for the 2012 election.

Re: Cindy Sheehan. Given that she lost a son to the imperialist war machine, I think she can be forgiven for finding this upsetting. Like I said, when I heard her speak she didn't seem like a loon.

Don't you think it would be pretty easy for bin Laden to prove he's alive and make the Americans look like idiots? (Or are you saying they really captured him instead?)

Torpedoing Argentinian cruisers sailing away from conflict was deemed fair play.

Quite rightly so. The sinking of the Belgrano was an act of war against a nation who had, de facto, declared war on Britain by invading and occupying a British Dependent Territory.

The blame for the loss of Argentinian lives can be placed squarely at the door of Mr Galtieri's regime.

Agreed. He's dead or captured. The ramifications of getting this wrong are enormous. They haven't got it wrong.

Disagree. The evidence is in the lack of credible counter-assertions/evidence.

The US doesn't need to release pictures. They know he's dead or nicked. If photos are released, the claims will be that they're faked.

It's a no win situation for the yanks. Far better imo, to let the conspiracy theories run, in the full knowledge that they're bollocks, than to engage in a "we got him/no you didn't" debate.

No. I agree with you that he is dead. The issue is how this fact is presented and a recognition that the way this is being done is just guaranteed to create doubt. and it seems to me to be awfully patronising to dismiss the perfectly reasonable request for evidence with a "oh whatever they do no one will believe anyway" shrug. Some will never believe, many will. If given evidence.

I think he's dead. You think he's dead. No one in Pakistan does. There was an interview with some one tonight in a Pakistan street. The guy they were interviewing was asked if people in Pakistan believe he had been killed. He turned to the crowd of onlookers and asked them in urdu. A huge shout came back "No" followed by shaking of heads. No one in Pakistan believes a word of an American president and who can blame them after WMDS in Iraq? This argument that gruesome photos would "inflame" people . What a lot of bollocks. Al Qaeda are irrelevent. Religious parties in Pakistan could barely gather a few hundred demonstrators today to "mourn" him. If his death is greeted with a shrug of the shoulders by people then a few gory photos are not going to change that.

A" we got him/no you didn't" debate is exactly what the US has created by refusing to provide evidence. It seems to me a perfectly reasonable request in all areas of life to ask for evidence of that which is claimed to be true. As of yet what evidence is there? None. Just the word of a US president and of course the world should take that at face value because US Presidents have never been known to lie have they?

The folk that refuse to believe he's dead aren't going to be convinced by photos of a mashed head with a beard on it.

Where's the upside?

But in reality, what evidence could they provide, that wouldn't be met with a countering response rubbishing it?

What you're missing is that the administration is playing to its voter base. They want to be seen as fundamentally different than the Bush administration, which would have posted pictures in an instant and spent the next four years wanking over them.

Nonsense. They've killed or captured Bin Laden.

Again, where's the upside in releasing photos or other evidence that will simply be refuted?

If he isn't dead or captured, let his guys release credible evidence to the contrary and make the US look like monkeys.

Tip: Don't hold your breath!

hasn't his daughter also publicly stated that OBL is dead?

yeah, your right. who cares about silly things like evidence anyway. Let's forget the libraries of evidence for evolution. Just take the word of your biology teacher as given. The creationist doubters will never stop denying it anyway. What's the point?

Silly example ok. but it just strikes me as absolutely bizarre that people think providing zero evidence for a claim as massive as this is somehow acceptable. (in fact when is providing zero evidence for anything ever acceptable). I repeat, as of this moment, not a single scrap of evidence has been provided except the word of the President.

You really need to stop putting words in people's mouths. It's quite rude.

Maybe they don't think he's dead like some people don't think Jesus or Obi Wan Kenobi is dead?

Or maybe the guy was being interviewed in a village where they didn't have TVs and they hadn't been made aware of the news?

Ok I could go on all day, but my earlier point still stands - if bin Laden is alive it's pretty easy for him to prove otherwise so eventually, images or no images, people will have to accept it.

A bit rich seeing that earlier in this thread you practically accused me of racism for suggesting that conspiracy theories flourish in Pakistan then flouncing off and running away when I posted reams of evidence that this is in fact an endemic sociological phenomenon there.

Yuwipi Woman Yes, those dumb Pakis they'll believe any conspiracy theory put in front of them.
