old routemasters

I must admit, having done various bits of minibus/campervan (7.1m) noodling around over the last few weeks, to a daydream of galumphing around the place in a Regal IV (RF). Not that it's ever going to happen...

an update - more on ensign bus event (saturday 2 december) here - day ticket is £ 10 a go (all buses involved are fully licensed for hire and reward as of course are ensign, so it's not the 'free service but we hope you buy a programme' sort of event.

Smaller event (with free bus service) based on Bromley is confirmed for Sunday 10 December this year, but info not yet published. Usually consists of two or three double deck buses on the Grove Park - Petts Wood bit of old route 94 (now parts of 261 and 208) and single deckers on the Bromley - Penge bit of route 227 (some journeys to / from Crystal Palace)

Timetable for the 227 bit here (opens as pdf) - mainly Bromley - Penge with journeys to / from Crystal Palace. Slightly lumpy timetable - every 10 to 55 minutes. No timetable available for the limited operations on the 94 and 61 route yet.

The buses involved are London Transport's RF type, 1950s single deckers. Please be aware they are not remotely 'easy access' as the underfloor engine means there's 2 fairly steep steps at the entrance, and they may not be able to accommodate even folded push-chairs and so on.

like so -

I *heart* RFs

On Christmas Eve there will be a special operation of buses including the 'coach' version (tbh more express bus than proper coach) of the Routemaster between Windsor / Slough and Victoria (some journeys from / to Bracknell), to mark the start of Reading Buses (one of the few remaining council owned bus companies) taking on the 'Green Line' route between London and Windsor / Bracknell (First Berkshire have decided to give up on it)

Timetable here (opens as pdf) - operates on free basis but donations accepted towards Reading Buses charity of the year.

There is a single bus (early 50s RT) running a free service on Xmas Day between Putney Bridge and Roehampton - more here.

On New Years Day - there are smallish bus running days in Bristol, Oxford, Winchester (this is a small scale thing - not the big event that used to happen) and a slightly bigger event (about 15 buses running) in Coventry (no website - event based at the Butts Arena - bit more info via here.)

Gone are the days of jumping off too early and going arse over tit, or smack into a lamppost. Great fun. I loved the old Routemaster.

There's a bus event in Reading this sunday (3 June) - to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of trolleybus operation in Reading, but since it's a bit difficult to run trolleybuses without the electric string in the sky, there will be 20 - 30 motor buses (former Reading Corporation, Thames Valley / Alder Valley and a few guests) from the 40s to the 80s on the streets of Reading and surrounding area (including Maidenhead / Thatcham) on the day.

Everything starting from Station Hill, which is outside Reading railway station at the south west corner.

More info here.

I just happened to be in the Greyfriar when I read your post. We really should have a Berks get together one day.

This Saturday (bank holiday weekend - 26 August) - there will be 1950s / 60s green London Transport (country area) / London Country buses on the streets of Watford, operating a free service or two to mark the impending closure of what's now Arriva's bus garage at Garston, which was opened by London Transport in 1952.

More here

Main bus service from Croxley (Metropolitan Line) - note that there are no trains at all at Watford Junction station this weekend due to major engineering works. TFL buses 142 (from Edgware / Stanmore) or 258 (from Harrow on the Hill) are Oyster card-able all the way to Watford town centre if you really want.

Some connecting buses at start and end of day from the west / north east sides of London as well - more info here.

ETA - from what I can gather, buses on service on Saturday will call at Watford Town Hall, bus stops W and X in the town centre

A few events coming soon around London -

Saturday 1 December - Ensign Bus pre Christmas event (this one is paid for not free service) - again, timetable not out yet, but tends to be based on Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, usually involves services to Gravesend, Upminster, Brentwood, Grays

Sunday 9 December - 1950s single deck buses will be operating on route 227 Crystal Palace - Bromley, and usually a limited service with 1950s / 60s double deck buses on one or two routes in the Bromley area.

More info to follow, timetables for all three are not out there just quite yet.

a single Routemaster (Metroline Travel's 1962 RML 903) will be out on TFL route 4 this Friday (16 november), donations for Children in Need rather than fares - journeys (subject to the usual disclaimers) are

Nags Head 1104 to Waterloo 1204;
Waterloo 1211 to Archway 1330 (then a break);

was up belsize park on 9 november and saw a routemaster on the 24 route parked up at south end green

that was a similar sort of thing (except on route 24) to the children in need thing, but raising funds for something remembrance day related. I wasn't aware of it until after the event

Timetable now out for the (free) special service on route 227 this sunday (9 december) here (opens as pdf) - fairly confident this is for this weekend despite showing 2019!

somewhat 'irregular' service - buses every 10 to 35 minutes between Penge and Bromley, some journeys between Penge and Crystal Palace, and a break over lunch time.

Buses will be early 1950s RF type single deckers (you can't get double deckers under the railway bridge at Shortlands, at least not unless you want an instant open top bus)

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, these buses have the engine under the floor, and the doorway is quite narrow with two steep steps so they are most certainly not 'easy access', and space even for folded push-chairs can't be guaranteed.

and from past experience, timekeeping at this event can be affected badly by traffic - looks like they are not being allowed to use the bus station to stand at Bromley, so if they arrive late at Bromley they are going to leave late as well.

No info yet on the expected service on bits of route 61 / 94 in the general direction of Orpington or Petts Wood (this usually involves a couple of double deckers - one or two Routemasters and / or 'RT' types - the generation before Routemasters.)

(disclaimer - I've no personal involvement with this event by the way)

Advance notice - March / April next year will mark 40 years since the RT and RF types last ran in service with London Transport, events are being planned at Kingston (RFs) and Barking (RTs)

Some coming events -

Sunday 24 February, 'Green Line' event in connection with the Epping - Ongar Railway. Featuring 'Green Line' coaches from the 50s to 70s (Green Line was traditionally more a limited stop bus service linking central London with the home counties, with fancier versions of London bus types rather than 'real' coaches). More here. (NOTE - this event involves buses that are fully licensed as buses, so not a free rides event.)

Sunday 24 March - event based at Brooklands, Weybridge marking 40 years since RF buses (1950s single deckers) last ran in regular service (London's last ran from Kingston), with free bus services including to / from Kingston and Staines. More here. (note - RFs are by no means 'easy access')

Saturday 30 March - event based at Barking, marking 80 years since the first RT bus entered service and 40 years since the last RT ran in regular service at Barking (although those that were still running in the 70s were built after WW2) - includes 'open day' sort of thing at both Stagecoach and Go Ahead Barking bus garages, and RT buses running in service. More here.

A few one-offs are being planned for Friday 15 March with Routemasters running as extras on London routes taking donations for comic relief. More info if and when I get it.

Also, the 'heritage' Routemaster operation on part of route 15 (Tower Hill - Charing Cross) has now been reduced to run at summer weekends only as part of TFL implementing government cuts.

Further to previous, there will be seven special operations this coming Friday (15 March) for Comic Relief day, with either Routemasters or the previous generation of bus (late 40s / early 50s RT types) on routes 2, 8, 9, 23/228, 24, 25 and 159
